Brown nearly opaque with a tawny foam and sheets of lacing. Not really much of a nose. Faint chocolate and roasted malt. Taste has chocloate and light coffee notes right away. Lightly roasted malt just a hint of sweetness balanced with bitterness to the point of being dry. Some odd chalky or lactose note jumps in but is easily ignored. Mouthfeel is medium and lightly creamy. Solidly carbonated. This is one of OC's better offerings within their 2015 St. Patrick's mini tour.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown color with a one finger tan colored head. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is rather strong of a more roasted malt smell mixed with some smells of a lighter coffee aroma and a bit of caramel. Along with these smells comes some lighter notes of cocoa and a hint of vanilla.

Taste – Upfront the taste is strongest of a nice roasted malt flavor mixed with a decently strong cocoa flavor that contains some notes of molasses and caramel. As the taste moves on from the start, a coffee flavors start working its way onto the tongue. The coffee starts out lighter, but gets more potent as the taste advances, all while the cocoa fades a bit. The molasses kicks it up however, and is joined by some lighter brown sugar flavors. In the end with all the transitions that occur and with a little bit of a increase in the roast, one is left with a nice dark, sweet, and more porter like taste to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the average to just a tad lower side. For the nice dark flavors of the brew, mixed with the sweet and chocolate, the feel is quite nice making for a nice drinking dark brew overall.

Overall – A very tasty “brown ale” although I think it somewhat more porter like in nature as it has a rather big, robust, dark presence mixed with a moderate amount of sweetness. Anyway you categorize it, it is rather nice.
