as much an esb as an english ipa to me, insofar as we can appreciate a difference in a beer like this that really flirts with that line and muddles the distinction. i smell and taste maris otter malt in this, which i intimately associate with esb, so thats what i am calling it. is its pleasantly hoppy too though, more than just bitter, and the grain isnt sweet like they can sometimes be, balanced but not over balanced in that way, nicely measured there. malt driven though as much as the hops, that kind of balance. the yeast is very subtle, almost too subtle to be english, at least in the way i look for these styles to be, but its there, maybe a hint of tang from a burton strain or something, but likely fermented cool enough to keep it from being super influential. fruity notes in the middle here, some brown sugar too maybe, good and not overbearing though. carbonated quite well, and overall a safe but drinkable brew. i think it could probably stand to be a little hoppier overall, especially considering its name, i wanted a little more of that element, but this is still one of the better boulder beers i have had in a little while. english styles dont get enough love from the colorado craft brewers i dont reckon...

Dark yellow to light orange, 1/3" off white head. Aroma drops the earthy old world hops and toffee malt.

Taste is the usual bitterness without hop mouthfeel, a warming sensation of alcohol with the bitterness. Achieves balance. Takes on a woody feel downbottle. A stronger than average English ipa.

08/07/2014 Nitro tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. This really has me wondering why I slammed this the first time through. It is, in fact, a very nice ale. The Nitro lends a creaminess that sets it a notch above other iterations.

03/04/14 On tap. Very nice stuff. This shows how a well behaved member of the hop family of brews can please and I am very pleased. Wonderful balance. Smells hoppier than it tastes. Good cold. Doesn't look like I'll get try it at room temp. At 6.5% this should be monitored carefully as it very deceptive & delicious.

***Note: Not sure why I dis'sed the nitro experience last year (see below). It may be that the nitro addition of more fizz let the temperature raise & open up too much hoppiness. Note the mention of "good cold". I tend to forgive the author as he's usually drinking on the job. Jul'14

08/20/13 On nitro tap. Let me start by saying that I'm not a hops fan, but this is beer reinforce that. This is the first time I've ever truly regret not having had a taste first. I've spent the money & will drink it down, as not to fret the bar, but this should have a warning label. IMO this is way off base & I see the Rate Beer give it an 88 rating? A jaundiced view, no doubt.

This brew was served on nitro at MacGregor’s Grill and Tap Room in Canandaigua, NY. It arrived in a dimpled house mug, showing a ruddy orange almond coloring. Initially the entire mug was filled with bubbly foam, but this eventually fizzled away into liquid, supporting a finger tall head of leftover creamy eggnog headiness. This showed excellent retention, leaving a single thick sheet of lacing around the glass. Haze was decent, but no sediment was noted. Carbonation was heavy and pervasive. The aroma sung of honeydew melon and synthetic banana fruitiness, raisin breads, phenolic plastics, dirty estery sweetness, lemon rind and flesh sweetness, pale and lightly roasted caramel malts, tannic dryness, fig, and toasty sesame seeds. Our first impression was that there was a nice bitterness and toast to the malt base, but there was a general lacking of hops all around. The taste began with bitter toast of pale and crystal type malts, straw, mineral, buttery diacetyls, cherry and strawberry sweetness, distant resiny hop oiliness, and cider vinegar. The middle came to a peak with soft boozy wash, raisin and cherry flesh fruitiness, brown and pale malt sours, yeasty metallics, and chlorine plastics. The end of the sip followed through with cereal and dry pale graininess, browned grassiness, adjuncty coin, clean banana esters, toasted pecan Sandies, melted caramel sugars, and oily pine nuts. The aftertaste breathed of lead and pencil woodiness, newspaper, cranberry skin and seed, faint floral and grassy hops, toffee and burnt caramel sugars, chocolate wafer cookies, aluminum, sunflower pollen, lemon rind, adjuncty echoes, wax, and dried twigs. The body was light to medium, and carbonation was lighter. Each sip was unfortunately watery and flat, with only okay slurp, smack, cream, froth, and dull finishing pop. The mouth was left wet, with light astringency coming on the back with time. The abv was appropriate, and the beer was easily consumed.

Overall, the most enjoyable thing about this beer was its flavoring, especially after it came to temperature. It was a tough call to choose, actually, because we were rather dissatisfied all around with regards to the lacking of hops in both the nose and flavoring. The aroma starts with soft sweets and decently robust floral, herbal qualities, but without the hops it doesn’t sit too well stylistically. We ran into the exact same thing with the flavoring. We haven’t had a straight English IPA in awhile, and we were pretty excited, so maybe we were let down a little too hard. Additionally, and this may be due to the nitro, but things seemed way too flat and overly soft to support the base flavor, which remained somewhat complex inherently. While this isn’t a terrible beer, as it does hit the spot, it fell way short of what we were expecting, again, especially after that aroma.

Good haze in the English IPA. It dons a coppery-orange color and a sporting white cap of seafoam. The head looks like a patch of insulation. Doesn't really want to wear out anytime soon, either.

Salty cracker aromas of citrus and earthen hops of flora and worldliness. Notes of seawater, freshly cracked wheat, sesame, barley grain, and leafiness. Boasts some freshness to go along with a musty yeast element indicative of the style.

First sip gives off more of that sesame seed nuttiness that I picked up in the nose--definitely a byproduct of the recipe. Citrus mixes with English maltiness and the best descriptor is of semi-sweet navel orange and pith. Bigger still is the presence of floral hops with an orchard vibe. Breezy, but no longer saline. Still, the taste follows the nose. Caramel malts make a stand against the intent, so (for an American craft example) the style designation is semi-questionable. Hoppiness is meager to hold class with other IPAs, but there's a needed balance that it offers. Other gritty flavors that finish this beer are notes of pine, faint toffee, and grist water. Perhaps, grapefruit makes an appearance.

On the topic of the feel, each sip is an easy swish but a more trying swallow. That's the carbonation acting all big and strong. Turns out to be quite the belch-inducer (note: I am downing this a gulp every twenty seconds). That effervescence will get you; prying open the pockets of the mouth and tingling the gums. Most British examples I've had tone it down a bit to develop ease of palate.

This beer is pretty good, all things considered. It's a tough style to brew a beer to win over a crowd with, but I can happily enjoy this 22-ounce pour with no regrets. Alcohol won't get you, either. Maybe it's hit-or-miss; but on-draft, it's a hit.

Served on tap in an imperial pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served an orange amber colored brew with tons of tiny carbonation bubbles seen streaming up through the body of the beer. Floating atop the beer was a one finger pure white and foamy head that faded rather fast. Once largely faded, there was a persistent film and a good deal of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is sweet of a citrus smell with lots of tangerine and orange and a nice sweet tropical fruit and apricot smell as well. Mixed with these aromas is a little bit of a malty smell as well as some piney and floral aromas.

Taste – The taste begins with a biscuit and cracker taste mixed with a moderate dose of caramel sweetness. As the taste moves forward the sweeter taste profile changes becoming less caramel like, but more sweet fruit like with flavors of tangerine and pineapple dominating. Mixed with the bready flavors that are initially present is a light citrus hop taste of a grapefruit nature which creates a base for the brew. While the hop is light at first overall, toward the end it gets quite a bit more intense as the grapefruit is joined by other hop flavors of a floral and earthy nature. The transitions of the sweet flavors and the presence of the more potent earthy hop flavor that develops on the tongue at the finish, ends up leaving a moderately earthy bitter and smoother malty flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is average in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is, as would have been expected from the appearance, composed of tiny carbonation bubbles. Overall the medium bodied nature mixed with the moderate but peppery carbonation were nice for maintaining a more refreshing and easy drinking brew all the while still allowing all the nice hoppy flavors time to be fully appreciated by the tongue.

Overall – A rather tasty and smooth tasting brew with a very nice but still quite drinkable level of hop. Overall it is a rather balanced brew and a treat to drink.

I was a little surprised that I liked this one since it is a fairly common and inexpensive beer. It poured a hazy orange color with a slight white head. A nice malty aroma topped this one off. No real hint of the hops was detectable in the aroma. In the initial taste, one gets peach skin notes mingling with the hops. A smooth malty backbone makes this a nice easy drinker. The hops are not too abrasive in this IPA, but are well balanced with the fruit and malts. In the aftertaste, the malt smooths the peach skin into a more modest fruit flavor. A surprisingly potent 6.8% ABV allows a mild warming sensation to be part of the aftertaste. The carbonation was not overly aggressive, making the aftertaste linger. This would be a nice IPA to have with a meal since it is not too complex. The food would not cause you to miss certain nuances of the beer.

A: Pours a hazy orange with a good two finger head. Good lacing down the glass

N: Wow, when handed this beer I could smell the resins and piny hop aromas. I thought immediately that this was an AIPA.

T: A little lacking when compared with the nose, still solid. Flavors of grapefruit, bitterness are present and then knocked aside by malty, bread, yeast flavors.

M: Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Good mouthfeel.

O: Pretty solid, I would get it again depending on the price. I was surprised to see this was an English IPA when as I noted for the nose but the flavor is more subdued as would be expected for an EIPA.

Served in a British nonic. Slightly hazy apricot color. Forms a thick creamy stable head. Leaves sheets of lacing.
Aroma is nearly non existent, but what is there is cracker and toast, with just a hint of hops.
Taste is very mild. Light caramel malts, bread, toast. Very mild herbal hops.
Nice creamy mouthfeel. Moderate bitterness.
A decent beer, certainly better on nitro than from the bottle, but still a fairly average beer.

A rusty orange-red in color with a deep haze all the way through, this beer looks the part and more, showing a depth and substance in the form of a nice, tight, creamy but firm head over a finger tall with very nice retention. The lacing left behind falls in heavy drooping curtains all the way to the bottom of the glass.
The smell is pungent with floral and piney bitterness but with a bit of something like apricot almost leaning toward American. Malts are not quite crackery dry and not quite bready, more like bread crust but working well in this earthier brew. It has a bit of fruity sweetness to it but remains British nonetheless.
I look forward to trying this in the bottle; as it is, some is lost off the nose, including a bit of the fruitiness (though some remains). It's not that it goes anywhere; in the flavor, though, I get a lot more dryness and earthiness. The bitterness becomes more pithy, more akin to dandelion; not abrasive, but a little chalky and woody. Not harsh, but hard, for lack of a better way to describe it.
There's nothing wrong with the feel. It's moderately both crisp and smooth, with active but stable carbonation in a solid medium body.

Pours out an orange-amber color with light haziness and a relatively stable half finger lid of foam that leaves behind some lacing. Medium body and carbonation level.

Smells mostly of pineapple, pine resin, honeyed floral perfume, and caramel. Tastes of grapefruit, caramel, floral salad and apricots. Finish is semi-dry with herbal and tea-like hopping overtones.

A solidly-constructed English IPA.

Pours honey-golden with a medium, ivory head and good coarse lacing. Beer is hazy to cloudy with lots of bubbly carbonation apparent. Nose is generally lacking.

My real complaints come when I sip. This ale is WAY too sweet. The Brits love their bitters, and bitter this beer just ain't! The taste is almost sickeningly sweet, generally fruit and honey flavors, with a faint hint of bitterness. Mouthfeel is cloying and sticky, slightly conteracted by the carbonation.

Overall, this beer may turn out to be a down-the-drainer, while I return to the fridge for a hop fix. As far as I'm concerned, this is not true to style and a huge, barely drinkable disappointment. Perhaps the six-pack I bought was a bad batch or was somehow mis-treated.

A - The color of this brew is spectacular, a beautiful hazy amber gold, with a thick creamy head that leaves lots of lacing on the glass. Looks like a classic beer.

S - It might just be me, but it honestly doesn't smell like very much at all. Maybe a little hint of hops here or there, but for the most part I can't pick up on anything.

T - I sure am glad it doesn't taste how it smells! This beer tastes wonderful, like an IPA mixed with a thick lager. Lots of hops, lots of citrus, and some pound cake maybe at the very end. Also picked up on ritz bitz cracker maybe? The aftertaste i very pleasant as well.

M - Nice and thick, unlike some other IPAs. Not too thick, but a lot more character than I'm generally used to for the style, and that's not a bad thing.

O - Having only recently being introduced to Boulder, I must say that so far I am very impressed by their beers. All of them are very flavorful and full and are perfect examples of their respective styles. This beer is no different, and is a great example of a British style ale.

Bright orange in color & realizing this is my first EIPA. Frothy pillow-like off white head leaves thick lacing down the mug. Malt heavy in the nose with an excellent dose of fruity & spicy hop presence in the backdrop. Malty goodness on the tongue - bready fresh malt sweetness meets slightly spicy & citrus fruit hops. Almost peppery in the finish combined with the sweet tang from the malt and hops works nicely. Well balanced beer here, I would drink this all day long. Time to get a few more of these, and I highly reccomend you do as well!

A British-style Ale brewed with Maris Otter malt and hops from New Zealand & The Czech Republic.
Pours a pale gold with light white head that provides good lacing throughout. Combination citrus, piney, and fruity nose, with slight breadyness notes. The mouthfeel is medium with a similar level of carbonation. The Maris Otter malt is pronounced upfront, then followed by a well balanced citrus and spicy hop flavor, with the the malt lingering just a little longer. And let it linger we will, as we have heard that this may be the last brewing of this amazing beer. Cheers!

S- malts up front and hops in the back. very classic english.

T-fuggle and goldings take the main stage here. malt is very solid backround

M- clean and session able

O- This beer is my personal fav from boulder beer. I wish they would make this year round.

A - Orange slightly hazed body topped by a frothy eggshell head of an inch or so tall. Nice stamina in the head too.

S - Nice combination of citrus hops, and English yeast aroma and light sweet malts.

T - It definitely has the English style ale yeast taste. The hops are noticed second and are bitter before anything else.

M - The feel is coarse and abrasive, yet is does leave a sticky feel in the finish.

~ This is a fine beverage and one I would have again. The feel is a bit aggressive for something I would consider sessionable. However, the beer overall is one I would recommend to a friend.

A- This beer has a gold/light amber color to it. Very clear with no sediment. Tight little white head. Ok lacing. Looks decent.

S- Smells like...well...marijuana. Honestly, i get dank herbal and slightly citrusy notes. Theres just a touch of sweet malt in there as well. Very nice aroma.

T- Very good. Sweet up front. The middle is filled with juicy, refreshing citrusy, grassy hop flavor. It finishes with a kind of honey sweetness and a lingering hop flavor. Really nice.

M-Lighter bodied and somewhat oily. Pretty highly carbonated but it lightens this up nicely. Pretty good mouthfeel in relation to the flavors.

O- Wow. Didn't expect to like this beer as much as i do. I would almost say it tastes like a hop-flavor forward, juicy APA to me. Not sure exactly what they mean by "british style ale," but if you like pretty sessionable, herbal/citrus hoppy pale ales, seek this one out.

Poured into 16oz. Tulip glass.

Appearance - Dark Orange/Rust color with some slight haze, with brighter shades of orange towards the bottom. Leaves a finger sized head that stays around for about a minute or so and leaves some good lacing.

Smell - It has a grassy smell combined with that of a fruity/bread aroma with a slight pine scent.

Taste - Sweet and Tangy with a fruity/grapefruit taste. It becomes a bitter grapefruit/citrus flavor at the very end. Hop characteristics are very subtle here and it has a subtle citrus aftertaste to it.

Mouthfeel - The carbonation was slight but perfect. It felt heavy on the palette and it had a thicker feel to it than most IPA's I've tried out.

Overall - A solid IPA that's able to distingush itself without forgetting that it's an IPA. It's not as strong as other IPAs I've had but it's still a very enjoyable beer to drink

On-tap at Boulder Beer Tap House at the Denver Airport

A: The pour is clear golden-amber color with a white head.

S: Smells quite buttery with lots of grassy and herbal hops. Sweet popcorn and bready malts. A bit of pine and citrus peel, too. Not a very pleasant aroma.

T: Sweet bread, toffee, and caramel with quite a lot of butter. Herbal and grassy hops and a weird, but very strong, perfume note.

M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O: This beer was just dreadful. Far too much butter.

Cloudy amber in color, with a big foamy head and rich, detailed lace. Impressive!

Aroma is strong on the citrus side (specifically grapefruit). Seems fresh, and really appealing.

Taste is bitter and citrus. A little sour, even. Cold Hop is definitely bold and hop-forward, yet not the usual IPA, as there's a strong malt character than tones down the bitter qualities well and soothes the tongue.

Very tasty, and a recommendable winner!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Bottle bears a stamp that states it should be drank by Nov. 15, 2011.

Pours a honey gold golor, with a two finger white head that reduces with plenty of spider-web sticky lacing left behind.

Malty in aroma, with caramel sweet and hints of hops. Definitley getting more malt than hop on this cold-hopped beer.

Taste starts malty sweet, with orange citrus. Bitter begin to creep in mid-way through the sip, ending with a dry hop finish.

Medium bodied, this is rather smooth despite being quite dry.

This is probably the best Boulder Beer offering i;ve had to date. Based on the strength of this, I'd definitely try another.

A- pours a beautiful translucent amber. Two fingers of tightly bubbled creamy head crowns the beer. Above average retention with some lacing.

S- Very elegant nose. Fruity berries, floral characteristics and citrus peel from the New Zealand hops blend with spicy herbal Czech hops beautifully. Finishes balanced with some dry biscuity malt aromas.

T- Spicey herbal hop flavor hits the palate at first with a sharp bitterness. It quickly transitions into huge floral berry like fruitiness. Finishes with some lemon peel and a rich balancing pale malt flavor that is down right delicious.

MF- full creamy mouthfeel with a medium body and smooth tongue massaging carbonation.

D- very drinkable.

Overall a brittish style ale that kills it with hop flavor while remaining balanced and subtle.

Pours a hazed copper and orange tinted amber with great cap of dense white nitro froth. Scent is a nice mix of fresh hops ranging from earthy, spicy and grassy British notes to fruity and floral American varieties. Taste is quite big on the hop notes... quite unexpected. Big juicy fruit notes ranging from orange to apple and pear. Strong but not overly aggressive malting that ranges from clean to lightly caramel and nutty. Even with the nitro, this was immensely hoppy without being overly bitter. Smooth, creamy medium body from the nitro pour, hops linger on the tongue. Overall it was unexpectedly bold and flavorful, only that aggressiveness was a touch too much at times as some subtelty would have been appreciated over the course of a pint.

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Copper brown/tan, nice 1 inch head, plenty of lacing.

Smell - Hops, malts, pineapple, grapes, some sugars, some lemon and banana.

Taste - Classic english hop and malt flavor. Lots of grapefruit and apple. Malts are roasted and add a carmal flavor. Pineapple also comes out in each drink. Fairly sweet but not overboard.

Mouthfeel - PRetty smooth on mouth. Tounge gets alot of hops, malts and sugars. Palette is left intact, only slighty bittered. Aftertaste is malty and sweet.

Overall - Soild and easy to drink. Balanced really well. ALcohol is low enough, has enough sweetness, and bitterness is low. Fine example of a english ipa, really enjoyed.
