Poured into a snifter with only a little bit of head. Nothing special appearance-wise; it looks like pretty much any other IPA.
The smell on this is beer is actually pretty nice -- hop bitterness covered by fruity rum overtones. Unfortunately, it smells much better than it tastes. There is none of that desirable aromatic hop flavor to speak of (you know, the reason we're all so bent on getting our IPAs as fresh as possible), only the bitterness. Granted, this is about what I would expect from an "aged" IPA, but still disappointing. Furthermore, whatever the rum barrel added to this beer seems to be limited to the smell; the taste just seems... empty.
Overall this is a disappointing beer. It doesn't offend the palate, but it's not particularly pleasant or interesting either. I wouldn't have a problem drinking it if somebody handed me a glass, but I most certainly wouldn't purchase it again.
