Otto has an intoxicating aroma of banana, bubblegum and cloves with a slight hint of liquorice. It’s full bodied and chewy with a warming smooth finish.

Copenhagen 1/5 2021. 44 cl can from Meny, Borups Allé, Frb. F. Black can with two horizontal red lines and Thornbridge's logo and ornaments in gold.

Pours opaque, reddish brown with a mid-sized white hed. Settles as a thin but consistent layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing.

Aroma is medium intense with a sweet, malty odor mingling with sour grains and alcohol. Sweet caramel, toffee and biscuits. Touch of banana. Tart orange with hints of citrus. Sweet lemonade.

Medium strong carbonation. Medium thin, soft, smooth texture.

Flavor is fairly intense with a strong sweetness followed by a more modesty tart bitterness. Aftertaste is sweetish and lingers for a while. Finish is semi-dry.

Solid dark Weizen with a healthy, bread, malty tenure.

Bottle from The Bottle Shop Druid Rd. Aroma and taste are spot on, but body is a bit thin. Nice nutty, pit fruit flavors, sweet aroma. Holds its weight well.

I last drank this beer in 2016, when it was still in bottle format. My review was not particularly complementary. Let’s take another look.

440ml can.
L: Cloudy, auburn colour. Off-white head is thin for a wheat beer and short-lived (probably because of the high ABV).
S: Sugar cane, a LOT of bubblegum, fruit cake and alcohol.
T: Bubblegum, soft brown sugar, ripe banana and liquorice. Bitterness is light, sweetness is moderate. Finish is hot and boozy.
F: Smooth, full body with plenty of stickiness.
O: In my original review, I described the beer as looking terrible. This time round, I like the red/brown hue and the head is much better with an aggressive pour and the requisite swill before the final measure. Also in my original review, I found the bubblegum nose and taste overwhelming and off-putting. It’s still very prominent but not as sickly as before and the rich, fruity malt really shines. The mouthfeel is much improved as well. Before, it was a little thin. Now, it’s rich but not cloying. Much better.

P.S. Loving the new Thornbridge can format, btw. More modern and striking. The Otto can (black with red trim) is particularly striking.

L4.25 Pours a very dark redy brown with a fantastic creamy head, held superbly, but quickly diminished once drinking started.
S4.25 strong wheat intriguing. Quite Belgian on the nose rather than typical German. (after reading another review pear drops is on the money!)
T3.75 Strong, rich and wheaty
F4 Medium body, good carbonation. Not sure what I was expecting as unfamilar with style but normally dark beers of this ABV might have a bit more body.
O4.25 A very unusual but worthy beer. Not my preference but I love that Thornbridge are pushing the boat out and getting into the weird and wonderful.

This is a good beer.

Have to agree with an earlier reviewer - this smells exactly like pear drops! Very deep brown, thick beige head that's all but gone by halfway down the glass. Banana, pear, bubblegum, licorice are all there. Sweet but not overly so. At 8% definitely not a schoolnight tipple but one I'll return to for sure.
