Named after the year Peter Walker patented the Burton Union system, 1838 is brewed exclusively on this historic set at Thornbridge. This premium pale ale showcases the finest ingredients, blending Maris Otter malt with Savinjski Goldings hops to create a full-bodied beer with a light amber hue. Expect rich, biscuity malt flavours, balanced by floral hop notes and a crisp, refreshing finish.

Bottle: Poured a clear golden color ale with a large white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of clean cereal malt notes with some light grassy hops notes. Taste is also a mix of clean cereal noted with grassy hops notes and light residual sugar notes. Body is average for style with good carbonation. Highly drinkable and well brewed with loads of subtle flavors.

500ml brown glass bottle.
L: Gold, not quite clear, with clouds of microbubbles rising to a long-lasting white cream cap that leaves sheets of lacing.
S: Citrusy, grassy, just a hint of malt.
T: Lemon shortbread. Nicely floral finish. Solid bitterness.
F: Full and clean and crisp and dry. Carbonation is just a tad high.
O: A flavourful and extra smooth English golden ale. Ever so easy drinking. Bottle-conditioning helps deliver a beer as close as possible to the pint of cask ale you’d hope to get in a pub. More bottle-conditioning please! Good stuff.

Bottle conditioned. Almost clear gold with gently rising bubbles producing a thin yet firm head.
A wonderful orchard and hedgerow blossom aroma with some light caramel malt. There's even a bit of Burton snatch. A noticeably British profile.
A sweet digestive biscuit flavour with pipped, fruity, balancing hops giving a medium bitter finish.
As close to a cask conditioned feel from a bottle that you can get.
A joy to drink. The second beer from the Thornbridge's Burton Union system that I've tried. Both have been exceptional.
Update: I have now had the joy of tasting this many times now and my score has been altered upwards to reflect this. An absolute dream of an English Pale Ale.

Half cask at Sheffield Tap. Bright, clear golden pour, persistent creamy white head. Bready, biscuity aroma. Taste is bready malts, dries on the palate. Mild fruity notes throughout.
