On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Pale golden colour, large white head. Pleasant fresh and fruity aroma, some floral notes too. The flavour is crisp with hints of citrus and white bread, true to style, Easy drinking, but I wouldn’t mind a little more bitterness.

L3 - straw. Virtually no head retention.
S3 - not terrible, but actually reminds me of the smell of a dodgy lager that has been sat all night at the bar. Something slightly nicer in the background.
T3.5 - tastes like a good strong lager to me.
F4.5 - spot on. Medium body, perfect carbonation.
O3.5- not sure what I was expecting from a hybrid beer. All I got was a good strong pilsner lager really.

Drank this after a rich IPA which was a mistake. It's a different kind of drinking. Balanced and tasty. Hint of citrus (more of the orange). Great biscuit malt. Not too carbonated. Pleasant experience. One of the best out of Thornbridge which are usually unoriginal or too out there.

L- Pale gold, clear, 3mm white head that clears swiftly.
S- Mild lager notes. (Not a lychee or papaya in sight with this one; a relief).
T- For the colour this comes through meatier/richer than expected. talking of rich it's a bit sweet for me.
F- Like a meaty, quite rich lager, despite an unchallenging 4.8%
O- I've visited Cologne (Köln) in Germany, and was wondering how this beer labelled 'Köln style', related to trad Cologne beer, a style called 'kölsch'. Seems they're one and the same but the latter [Wiki] " has had a protected geographical indication (PGI) within the European Union". So it's brewed like an ale but then lagered (cold stored) to maturity. Interesting to try but not distinctive enough to buy a UK version at UK (vs German) prices.
BB: 01/10/2019 330ml bottle.

[Reviewed from notes taken in Summer 2014.]

On-draught @ Craft Beer Co. Clerkenwell, London, England.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Quarter finger in height. Beige colour. Recedes quickly, dying within 30 seconds. Leaves no lacing on the sides of the glass.

BODY: Clear watery weak yellow of below average vibrance. Clean, lacking any visible yeast or sediment. Appears filtered, crisp, and refreshing.

Looks adequately carbonated. Not a unique or special looking beer, and far from great looking within its intended style.

AROMA: Crisp clean barley. Pilsner malts. Grassy/Noble hop aromatics.

No overt yeasty or off-notes are detectable. I find no overt booze.

Quite light in terms of intensity; it's not a horribly evocative aroma.

TASTE: Clean crisp barley. Pils malts. Grassy hops (probably Noble). I love that it's not too malty or syrupy, as foreign-brewed expressions of the German style often tend to be.

Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.

Cohesive, ableit simple. Balanced enough. Decently built.

Its biggest drawback is its simplicity and lack of impressive depth of flavour. I do like it, though, and it's consistent with the lesser quality Kolsch biere I had in Koln. But it's not a great expression of the style.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, crisp, aptly carbonated, light-bodied, and of near ideal thinness/thickness.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, scratchy, or rough.

Suits the taste well enough, but fails to elevate the beer as a whole. The crispness is nice, but specific flavours aren't accentuated by this texture.

OVERALL: It comes off feeling a bit...empty? It's fairly insipid, lacking the subtle hop character and obscene drinkability of a good traditional German expression of the style. Were it more refreshing, I might be able to get past its relative blandness. Certainly drinkable when trying it once, but I wouldn't buy it again. That said, I could see myself quaffing this by the stangenglas for a night, and that elevates it above overhopped American attempts at the style. Worth trying if you can find it fresh on-draught.

330ml bottle. Golden with a soapy head. Light nose. Super refreshing. Clean, dry, crisp, with a rich, smooth, semi-sweet finish. Best served cold and in large quantities. On a summer afternoon, this kölsch-style beer could turn a pub in Derbyshire into a brauhaus in Cologne. Particularly if served with black pudding, a rye roll and onions.

Bottled
Clear amber bodied with foaming white head that doesn't stay long
Quite a bready taste and thin fizzy MF
to me this is an interesting lager twist rather than an ale

500ml Bottle from Valhalla's Goat, Glasgow:
This one seemed more German than English which can only be a good thing with this type of beer. The taste was a smooth and clean one with a good balance that helped it go down quite easily. It's probably not one I'd go back to but it was an good beer and one worth trying if you get the chance.
