Rocky Bay makes good beers. But this one is heads & tails above the others. By far the best beer they offer & produce. I always look forward to the cooler weather to enjoy it.
Pours a dark, rudy, murky, raisinesque brown...thick. The head is almost nonexistant - a scant 1/8" of loose, off-white foam that fades rather quickly and laced with trace elements at the best.
Nose is interesting - deep, earthy, wet summer pavement, warm raisins, malty, some nectarlike quantities, traces of the high ABV...all hints of things to come.
The initial surge on the tongue is strong - roasted malts sing an earthy derge, raisin like sweetness, some mild oak rises on the pallete with the hop bitterness. It finishes lite (a surprise) with some bittersweet film as a reminder of what just happened. Surprisingly, the high ABVs are well hidden and are not really noticable, so be warned.
Again - this is the best beer Rocky Bay makes - by a longshot. Get your chilled butt to the brewery or brewpub and get some before the thaw hits. Well worth the trip.

This is my first time I had the Viking Plunder from these guys, usually I get the Red Ale (or whatever else might be available) Pours pretty thick, very little head on it which disappears quickly. Taste..sweet malty, dried fruit, alcohol kicks in and nice grassy hops, not bitter but right there. Feels a bit thick but this is a really nice brew. They had one more growler there and I'm hoping there will be more next time I drop by. One of the best I had so far.
Edit: Got a growler 12/31/2005, this one tastes a lot more malty like a damn good scottish ale, not so much hop flavor. I still love it.
