This was described to me as an amber ale, but with both the name and the rich malt profile, I think this qualifies as a mild if a loose interepretation of the style. A rich robust ale with huge, delectable malts and elements of smoke, wood, and perhaps meat. Dark cloudy amber with a small but persistent head. The big malts are not too sweet, and the hoppiness is generous but not intrusive. Mouthfeel is large and thick but not sticky. This would be a good beer to get when you want to take a break from extreme West Coast hoppage. I was very impressed with this beer. Although today was a bright sunny, almost spring-like day (groundhogs be damned), I imagine a pint of this would shake off any winter chill even though it's not as alcoholic as your average winter warmer. Still a very, very good beer, well worth trying.
