On tap at the original SE Hawthorne location, imperial (nonic) pint.
Amber body with a brownish tint. Half a finger of cream-colored head that doesn't last long, but can be revived with a swirl. Good sticky lacing.
Nice baking bread and caramelize sugar aromas, with a surprising citrusy hop punch.
Flavorful brew. Rich roasted/toasted and sweet caramel malts, but a fair amount of hops as well. Good earthy hop undercurrent, with a touch of tangy citrus. Nothing is overpowering. It's definitely on the hoppy side for an alt, but is well-balanced.
Moderate carbonation, medium bodied with lingering roasted malt, but also some noticeable bitterness.
Overall impression: Solid beer. More hoppy than you may expect for the style, but nicely balanced and very drinkable. A crowd-pleasing choice when sharing a pitcher at the brewpub.

A corny keg of this is currently breaking in tap #2 in my living room. Pours a deep amber color, topped by a good inch of creamy white head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of lightly toasted malt and some nice, spicy floral hops.
Palate is hoppy up front, with melllow, dry malt balancing things out after the initial bitterness. The beer ecomes more balanced as it washes over the tongue, before the bitter finish, accented by some nice, toasty malt. A mild metallic character from the malt may not be perfectly in character for this beer, but isn't unpleasant.
Body is smooth and a touch creamy, just about perfect for this style. This is a wonderfully easy-drinking beer, and I'm super-psyched to have it on draft at my house.

Tasted on-tap 06/04/07 at the Lucky Labrador Bewpub in Portland, OR.
Copper colored with a decent beige head and decent carbonation. Noticeable hop aroma and flavor -- this is the Pacific NW isn't it ? :-) Nicely balanced. Medium bodied and smooth with a nice light bitter hop finish.
A very nice American-style Alt. A bit too hoppy for the style; more of an APA. I would have rated the smell and taste higher ...
Per LL chalkboard: Simply labelled "Alt" - assuming it's the Crazy Ludwig's Alt...

Standout features are the exceptionally skillful balance of malted sweetness with an emergent hop bouquet, and the sensual, feathery mouthfeel courtesy of a nitro infusion. The head leaves elegant concentric rings of froth clinging to the glass.
Contrary to what the brewpubs name might suggest, there is nothing lucky about this effort this altbier could only be produced with considerable skill and craftsmanship.
Worthy of repeat performances, Crazy Ludwig is an easy contender for the best altbier in town.
