I'm sure I tried this beer on one of my many visits to the brewery. Don't remember any specifics about it though. Up until yesterday hadn't been there for about 7 years. This was one of my 1st black IPAs.

On tap in a nonic pint glass. Deep brown body with auburn highlights. The creamy head is modest in size, but retains very well and leaves plentiful lacing.
Quite a nice take on the CDA style. Plentiful burnt, husky and pine aromas. There's a touch of dark chocolate sweetness, but it's largely a dryish concoction of burnt/roasted malts and piney hop goodness. Good 1-2 bitter combo from the burnt malt and hops. Fairly gritty finish. Pretty good stuff here.

Appearance - pours a transparent dark brown, with a very light lacing and a low head
Smell - hop aroma
Taste - hop taste that echoes the aroma with a roasted malt backbone and a hop aftertaste
Mouthfeel - not particularly heavy, lighter
Drinkability - the beer was good, not a perfect example of a CDA

Half pint at the Lucky Labrador on Capitol in Portland for a few dollars, consumed 5/28/09, reviewed from notes
A-Medium to dark brown, 1/2 inch creamy off white head that lasted nearly five minutes, good retention, some nice sticky lacing too
S-Dark chocolate, piney hoppiness, light grapefruit, roasted notes, lemon, earthiness, other citrus, and slightly smoky aromas
T-Starts off with a nice pine hop flavor, stays hoppy through the middle but there is a nice roasted malt note in the backdrop, dry in the finish with some lingering earthiness, lots of nice dark chocolate taste once it warms to battle the malt, weird balance but it seems to work just fine, complex for its style
M-Roasted, dry, bitter, and earthy mouthfeel, medium bodied, moderate amount of carbonation, taste lingers well
D-Could drink a few glasses of this, went well with our pizza, alcohol is very well hidden or very low, did not know the ABV on this but my guess would be around five percent, feels light but has a lot of flavor at the same time, good drinkability
Did not expect this to be as hoppy as it was since it was just described as a dark ale on the chalkboard, this reminded me a lot of Stone's 11th Anniversary beer but more of a malt presence, would drink again, worth trying
