HUGE thanks to pkasten for sending a growler of this to me for an annual stout tasting. Pinot noir barrel aged version poured into an RJ Rockers shaker. Notes taken from 12.28.2010.
A: Pours a seemingly viscous, inky black. Large, two-finger brown head with great retention and impressive lacing. Really a great looking presentation that leaves little room for improvement and creates great expectations ...
S: Heavily roasted malts and baker's chocolate comprise the dominant aroma. In the background, almost perfectly, are hops, coffee, hints of dark fruit and wood. Really nice balance; not overly complex.
T: Exactly what you'd expect from the smell ... roasted malts and chocolate up front that fade slightly with the introduction of the hoppiness and coffee. Finishes with a mild hoppy bite, hints of dark fruit, and earthy, oak, and vanilla from the barrel aging. Just a bit of booze in the finish as well, but not enough to hurt the score.
M/D: Mouthfeel was great. Coating and slightly sticky, however, not overly viscous or chewy, lending to heightened drinkability. Very, very well balanced and it masked the alcohol content well, although it can catch up with you if you're not careful.
Overall this was excellent, especially considering that the growler traveled over 2,000 miles in a week and a half (after a weather delay). I'm very glad I got to try this, and am even more glad that I don't live in Portland ... this could be addictive. Highly recommended!
