Triumph (New Hope)- Double Amber

A- Deep amber reddish brown with a thick ringed lacing head. Left big lacing rings down the whole glass.
S- Heavy caramel malt with black strap molasses pine tar and tobacco.
T- Big thick sweet malt, hints of caramel and molasses. Heavy tobacco leaf, tar, and oily pine needles. Hot alcohol is present.
M- Starts off very sweet with a buttery sugary maltiness. quickly becomes a hot alc. tobacco body with a thick bitter sweet hoppy ending.

Overall- This was bigger than I was expecting. Triumph usually brews spot on, never over embellishing. This was a big malty hoppy bomb!

Appearance: clear copper with burgandy highlights. A one inch head lasts for while and produces some nice lacing.

Smell: the nose picks up strong pinecones, with softer citrus and caramel malts.

Taste: the flavor is much bolder than the Triumph standard Amber, as this has a strong malt backbone, loads of toffee, and strong pine bitterness. Some citrus and alcohol tones linger in the background.

Mouthfeel: generally smooth with a light crispness. Medium-heavy in body.

Drinkability: This is a nice bold beer that worked well as a final after-lunch drink. Definitely worth seeking out.

Closer to a IIPA then an amber ale. I had this beer in the fall (just found the review) and while it's not available year round I'm not sure it's their fall seasonal either. Decent off-white head faded slowly to a film leaving scattered pieces of lace behind. Transparent amber colored beer with an orange hue. Light piney hop aroma. Fairly thick and chewy beer. Dominant piney hop flavor with a bit of citrus hop and light malt. A big hopy red ale. Check out Ithaca's Cascazilla and Landmark's India Red Ale if you like this one.
