Following our leave-taking from Dundee Dell, this was our next stop and as we drove, the weather that had been so fierce earlier in the day began to kick back up. I do not remember ever seeing skies like we encountered on the way, especially while at a traffic light and the black clouds began to swirl into the fluffy white ones as though batter for a marble cake was being produced. I pointed with a shaky finger, but Bditty187 said that as long as things were not a continuous swirl, we would be all right. Phew! As we pulled into the parking lot, the torrential rain began to fall and we probably extended our stay a bit longer than otherwise necessary.

This was an austere, almost barren location that sat in a triangular corner of a strip mall. As we entered, the brew kettles were off to the right and an electronic dartboard plus a Golden Tee machine sat along the front wall. In the center of the space were a number of restaurant tables and chairs. Beyond the kettles were the bottle washers and the whole place had a very clean, disinfected feel to it. I was put in mind of therealbeerfly’s review of Shenandoah Brewing Company on Alexandria, Virginia, where he described everything as ready for inspection by a military official. I suppose that if you run a Brew-On-Premises, cleanliness would be the order of the day. The tiny bar was all of the way aft, covered with a dark granite countertop and the bottling line was to the right of the bar.

They featured eight (8) beers during our visit, but none were really outstanding, plus they all had a flavor profile that seemed to bespeak the same yeast strain in all of them. Eh.

One last note on this place, in regards to their name: it is “Nebraska” spelled sideways.

Went to Aksarben for the first time on a whim Saturday night, and in some ways I was very impressed.

Let's start off with the good:

Aksarben appears to have a singular focus, and that is beer. They want to brew good beer, and they want to help other people brew good beer. They're not interested in any gimics or having a trendy bar, they want to produce good beer. The facilities available for your own brewing are impressive to say the least, and especially at the cost and convenience (approx $130/6 cases). I tried a number of their beers, and found several I liked quite a bit. they had a decent variety available, with a number of lagers and lighter fair. The Heater was quite good, as was the Dunkel. They have an imperial stout that will be ready on the 14th, so I'll be going back.

The not so good:
They really do need a few more creature comforts. They did paint the walls, which looks nice, but they need to make a more comfortable atmosphere. I think that beer should be the most important aspect of their business (which it clearly is), but it shouldn't be the only one. While beer enthusiasts are important, and will show up for beer alone, they need to have a wider clientel than that. Said clientel will be harder to bring in with out a few extras (the flat screen and darts is a start).

Echoing the other reviewers, the guys who run this place are super nice, and I honestly hope the place is successful, as I hope to go back many more times.

Update (April 2006): I finally made a return trip to AK Brewing Co. The walls are now painted olive green and pine green. This really improves the appearance. A flat screen TV has been added along with darts and Golden Tee Golf.

The taps has been added. It is a small bank of 8. All house beers on-tap. Like the bottled beer it is served very cold in a plastic cup.

I tried the Imperial Stout… it was good, for a small American Stout.

It is hard to take this place seriously, which is a shame because the folks who work here are really nice.

Closed on Sundays.

Original review from 02-16-2006:

This review will have to be updated often. I visited the first night it was open to the public… it is still a work-in-progress.

Aksarben Brewing Co. is located in a strip mall, next to the Liquid Lounge. From the outside it is nothing to look at. Neither is the inside really but this is a BOP and a brewery with a tap room. They are clearly not looking for style points. At least it is ultra clean!

As of mid-February there were just some tables and a TV with a couple pictures on the walls. The taps were not installed. But they plan on having 16-taps with their house beers. However, they can’t have glass in the building because they don’t have any place to wash them. So, they might be using Solo cups or you’ll have to buy your own glass. Like I said, there are still kinks to be worked out.

On my visit they had 13 beers in bottles. They will be brewing over 70 recipes throughout the year! I sampled a dozen different beers, all were clean and inoffensive. Nothing was spectacular but everything was drinkable. All their beer use malt extract (with a mix of whole grains) and adjuncts like dextrose. IMO, the beers tasted like a mediocre/good homebrew. Of course, that is a sweeping overview.

As for the appearance, it is one big, clean room; the BOP tools, malt extract drums, and small brewing units are on the west wall. In theory, this is the focal point of the establishment. I believe the Brew-On-Premise concept will make or break this place. All their recipes use malt extract and dextrose. I’ve been told the processes they use are very simple. I thought the prices to brew here were reasonable.

Beer can be purchased to go in six-packs, plus they will have growlers at some point. Kegs are available also.

There is NO food here. None, zip, nothing… but if you are coming with a large group of people you can order food in.

I’ll update this as needed…
