Our seasonal offering of our “classic” Scottish style ale. Unlike our Isle of Skye Scottish Ale, which has malty, roasty and hoppy notes, the main emphasis in this beer is on its malt character. “90 Shilling” is a traditional tax designation that indicated the beer was of the highest quality.

I had this on tap at the Franklin location.
A: Poured out a caramel-nut, chestnut color, with a slight bit of chill haze.
S: Very complex candy aroma with butterscotch leading the way along with a deep, rich malty undertone.
T: Very fresh, full flavor, with the body to follow. I got the caramel butterscotch, and a bit of a dog food aftertaste (not meant necessarily to be a cut, that is just a quality that I often get on this style in general.
M: Very sticky and gooey, like any candy should be. The lacing with mildly splotchy.
O: I'm really not a fan of this style overall, but this one really worked for me.

got this on tap at ciceros here in st.louis. has a realy nice looking mahogany color to it, doesnt have much of a head on it. smell is weak, a slight whiff of caramel nutiness to it but thats it. taste is good, while not as distinct as other scotch ales, but thats not necessarily a bad thing. its a very easy drinking smooth beer. wish i could take a sixxer home

A - Dark, rich mahogany brown in color. Solid brown 1 to 2 finger head. Good retention and left big chunky lace on the glass.
S - Not as strong of aroma as I would hope for from a big malty beast like this. Smells primarily of roasted and toasted malts. Bready with hints of caramel.
T - Rich, bready sweetness initially. Hints of caramel coming through. A very light spiciness sneaks in and provides excellent balance to the huge malt profile. A very malty beer.
M/D - Medium to full bodied. A little too high on the carbonation. Very easy drinking.
I am not usually a malty beer fan, but Scottish/Scotch Ales are quickly becoming some of my favorites. This is a solid example from a darn good brewpub.

Had this on tap in the brewpub in Nashville. Pours a standard brown color with a nice head and decent retention. the aroma is of very sweet caramel. The flavor is full of malty goodness with caramel being the basic flavor. Slight bitterness from the hops, but very subtle. Very good beer for the malt lover. Slightly sweet. Easy to drink and very enjoyable. Body is just right on this one. Solid.
