Rogue Big Ass Barrel Caramel Porter is an Imperial porter brewed with lots of caramel malt to balance out the traditional roasted and coffee malts. It is then aged in Rogue (recently named "Distillery of the Year") Oregon Single Malt Whiskey barrels for more than 3 months to bring out vibrant vanilla, oak and whiskey aromas and flavors. Altogether, it is a flawless marriage of caramel, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, and smokey rich whiskey.

Had at the 18th annual HAF in Portland. Don't remember too much about this beer other than it was good. Not much coffee flavor which I approve of not being a coffee person. 55 IBUs

Good looking porter, very dark brown/black, with a pale tan head, some laciness.

Bouquet is more akin to a sour American lager. Not entirely good.

Flavor is distinctive, more like a black lager than a porter: some maltiness, but not the bitterness I expect from a porter. Lighter than a porter should be. But clean, good, beer tastes. Not a hint of sweetness, not a hint of caramel.

Mouthfeel is nice, moderate; I wouldn't mind more richness from a porter, especially a porter that's ostensibly flavored.

Finish is pretty good, and keeps the beer worth drinking. Long, with some nice malty bitterness, very well integrated with other secondary flavors, coffee, cocoa.

Overall: not bad. But alas, nowhere near the majesty of the Big Ass Barrel Smoked Tea Porter, which was more of what I was hoping for: the single best porter I've ever tried (it's been a while, but it's in the 4.5 to 4.75 range), and one of the best beers of any kind. This is not that beer.
