Poured from 12oz bottle into glass. No dating info on bottle or label; this beer was hiding at the back of the refrigerator. By the review/ratings dates, it looks like this beer was marketed during the last quarter of 2016.
Dark brown colored body, with garnet red highlights against the light. Thin light tan head. Just a couple of spots of lacing.
Aroma is roasted malts and molasses. A little nutty also.
Taste is a little sweet, and follows the nose with malts, molasses and nutty. Slightly bitter at the end.
Thin to medium mouth feel, and kind of dry. The booziness almost lends itself to some dark fruit aspects.
Rogue did well with this one, and quite straightforward, without the added taste components for which Rogue is known. I would buy this again if brewed again.

Pours a dark brown, almost black. Dark chocolate and molasses. Malty sweet but with enough of a hop backbone to give a slightly bitter feel to the finish. Very drinkable. Very potent at 9.4 abv but hides it well.

This brown ale is hardy - more like a stout or porter - and that's okay. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Low carbonation and smooth. Malty flavor and high ABV (9.4%) but hides it well. A little sweetness, but not too much. You can smell the malt. Easy sipping beer with some nutiness. Overall, I liked it and would have it again, but it is a limited edition, so we may not see it again.

So, when does a Brown Ale become a Porter? Or a Stout? Rogue is certainly testing the questions with this one. A dark, almost opaque color, light head and low carbonation to start with. The aroma of molasses and malt come up to greet the nose. Taste is rich, malty and in porter territory with a dry and lighter than expected body. A lingering bittness finish fits well. The hefty ABV is present but not hot. This is a fine, staight down the middle beer from Rogue and a welcome addition to the lineup after so many off-the-wall offerings with "voodoo" in the name.

L-Dark brown..whisp of a tan head..
S-Sweet and sugary...has some doppelbock notes..
T-Boozy....sweet....some roastiness and milk chocolate but also a nice nutty dimension....
F-Pretty boozy....not a bad thing but a bit of an alcohol bite on the finish...
O-Nice enough to try. Enjoyable.
