16-ounce can purchased from John's Marketplace. Canned on 07/17/2020. (Date stamp also reads "Text feedback to 541-819-0449") Poured into a tulip-style half-pint glass.
Look:
The beer is clear and very dark brown with dark amber highlights. A thin head of tan foam doesn't last long, but leaves sticky lacing.
Smell:
The nose leads off with tons of dark roasted malt, accented with cocoa powder, fresh ground coffee, and a little caramel.
Taste:
Strong flavors of roasted malt and dark chocolate, enhanced with mild caramel sweetness and notes of dark roast coffee. The bitterness is moderate, but the roast flavor lasts and lasts. The finish is bittersweet and earthy.
Feel:
The body is medium-light with slight astringency. Moderate level of carbonation.
Overall:
Rogue's Black Is Beautiful Black Lager is so roasty and chocolaty that it comes across as a lighter-bodied and less hoppy version of Rogue's Shakespeare Stout. Surprisingly easy to drink, and makes a great loaf of beer bread. Black is beautiful, indeed.
