Colossal ClaudeColossal Claude
Notes: It’s been a few decades since a Colossal Claude sighting has been reported, but we’re fairly certain the massive sea monster has been laying low off the coast of his favorite brewery. Word has it that after years of terrifying sailors and feasting on salmon he acquired a taste for hops. So we brewed this Imperial IPA with a colossal dose of Cascade, Chinook, Citra and Strata hops in hope of coaxing Claude out to join us for a pint.

Canned on 7/13/2021, this is probably better when fresher but I think this was stored on the colder side and my sample didn't taste old. Alcohol is well concealed. Hops are forward but not over the top. There's some chew to the feel. I would very much like to try a fresher can because even being over 6 months old I found this to be enjoyable.

There's a little hop monster living inside all of us and it might just take a combination of Cascade, Chinook, Citra and Strata hops to coax it out of us. And with that remedy comes Rogue with a bolder IPA.

Colossal Claude pours tarnish gold with a standard hop haze. As its creamy white froth builds on rim, a fruit forward scent of citrus, tropical fruit, stone fruit and tea-like herbs flood the nose. Following closely behind, the flavors of honey, light caramel, cashew and shortbread bring a malty-sweet upstart to the initial palate.

As the flavors flow along the middle palate, its sweetness reveals a supporting role for the fruit. The natural estery profile of Rogue delivers the taste of apricot, marmalade and bruised nectarine white the complementing hops flavors of pink grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, pineapple and mango. Trending in the direction of berry, cantaloup and peach, the fruit flavors are varying, nuanced and complex before the hops trend herbal with those strong tea, tobacco and sassafras woodsy bitternesses balance the sweetness and command attention of its own.

Medium full in body, the beer trends drying and spicy with a twinge of gin-like spice. It finishes decidedly bitter but not without support or complexity from fruitiness and malt balances. A long aftertaste of peppery pine resins and fruit peels linger with satisfying bitterness.

Poured into a grip shaped wide mouth goblet: color is slightly hazy gold, head is off white with fine bubbles and presents 1 finger thick, then dissipates to thin top with a thick ring on the the glass sides.

Smell is a little subdued, even after some warmth but the gist of the iipa is there: crisp earthy hops, light pine, some citrus pith, maybe some tea; malt is light and just enough biscuit and hint of toast.

Taste is similar with subdued (for style) but high quality flavor: pine, citrus pith, earth, light tea and hint of pepper, malt is lightly sweet with some toast. Alcohol is not noticeable.

Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation, moderate sweetness, moderate/high bitterness with drying bite on the tongue.

Overall a simply well executed IIPA - crisp, bitter, earthy, piney, light citrus, enough malt character to balance strength.

Cloudy unfiltered golden yellow body. Pine, caramel, a bit of white sugar, grapefruit. Classic floral and pine bitterness throughout, a bit of sweet yeast ester. Medium bodied, good carbonation. Solid, servicable and fairly easy to approach for a DIPA.

Can poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewery pint glass

A: Pours golden amber with a slight chill haze and a frothy eggshell white head that settles to a thin layer and laces nicely.

S: Resinous spicy pine, earthy herbal notes, tropical and orchard fruit, citrus, bread malt, and a little caramel sweetness.

T: Spicy pine, citrus, grapefruit, lemon lime, and orange, tropical and orchard fruit, peach, apricot, passion fruit, pineapple, plus hints of over ripe melon plum, slightly dank earthy herbal notes, bready malt, and

M: A bit on the fuller side of medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: This one slowly grew on me. It's got a nice West Coast bite up front and a sturdy malt backbone to tie things together. Nice mix of old school and new school.

It looks good but smells and tastes almost like a barley wine. I haven't had a good beer from Rogue in a few years and its disappointing honestly. There's almost no bitterness or hop flavor. If you like "hoppy" barleywine this is for you.

12 oz 2021 can.
Appearance. Hazy amber colored body with a very good white head.
Aroma. Dank and piney. High ABV is evident.
Flavor. More malts and less evergreen than the aroma suggests. Moderate- low bitterness for the style but plenty of hop derived flavor.

De Labirratorium. En copa Teku. Estudiando. Dipa dominada por el peculiar perfil de la levadura de Rogue, con el alcohol bien oculto aunque sin llegar a entusiasmar del todo. Se bebe sin problemas, si, pero le falta algo que le dé más vidilla

!2 oz. can - canned 03/26/21:

Pours golden amber with the slightest of hop haze. A thin white head stays, leaving trailing lace.

The smell is of pine and tropical notes (pineapple, papaya, orange) with a slight hint of grapefruit. A dash of black pepper comes through.

The taste is of pine, tropical fruits with a nod towards grapefruit. Black pepper is mild but noticeable. Malt comes through. Black tea lingers through the finish. It is very smooth as the alcohol is very well-integrated and there is a malt backbone. It does not leave a sweet aftertaste, nor is it too bitter.

It is a traditional Northwest IPA ramped up enough to be "imperial", yet very drinkable. A very nice brew that is well-balanced, delicious and smooth. A good value and a very enjoyable brew!

Looks like a yellow beast with a small white head.

Smells of fresh pineapple.

Tastes of pineapple and lychee, with hints of mango, papaya and jackfruit.

Medium body that reads of a much lower abv.

Got in Phuket, Thailand where I’m enjoying at home, Aug 26, 2021.

Back at Marilyn's of Morgantown, 8/19/21.
Ordinarily Rogue knocks our socks off, but this one's just ok. A very sweet orange aroma is followed by an odd butter aroma. On the mouth, that butter sensation follows through in the mouthfeel, very smooth and creamy, good just not what I expect it an IPA. Slightly sweet and citrus flavor.

This is sort of a hopped-up malt liquor, but plenty drinkable. Just the thing for the brown paper bag while walking those long, dark blocks to the Red Rooster Lounge.

Couldn't resist a Rogue beer I hadn't seen, especially in the long rifle 19.2 oz can. Pours a clear orangey amber with plenty of foam in the chalice. Lush and fizzy between the teeth. This has the Rogue trademark earthy, dank, and herbal hops. Flavors of passion fruit with a dose of orange-pineapple-banana juice. Quite sweet, but in the spirit of the thing it's just right. Canned 04/30/21 and purchased at Whidbey Beer Works.

Single twelve ounce can copped from Total Wine and More in West Orange. Pours a bright golden hue with tremendous frothing. Assertive aroma replete with hints of sharp citrus and ripe pineapple. Good stuff. Recommended.

I like the can artwork. The pour is carrot colored. On the taste, I'm picking up on some mild caramel, orange, grapefruit, & Haitian mango. Cheers! B

Poured a golden body, slightly transparent but a little dark hue to that gold, with decent foamy head that slowly dies. Aroma has citric notes, a little dirty and earthy even, with some zip to it. Easy to drink as it has a light-to-medium body with minimal bitterness from mostly citric and earthy hops with smidge of maltiness. Good balance and a beer that you can relax with.

Rogue Ales "Colossal Claude"
16 fl. oz. can, "CANNED: 03/17/21 21:17" and sampled on 06/28/21
$3.49 @ Javies Beverage, Philadelphia, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: So what is this, an Imperial IPA at 8.2% ABV? Hmmm... it's brewed with Cascade, Chinook, Citra, and Strata ~ half old, half new. OK, let's see what it looks like... hazy golden amber beneath an inch or more of densely foamy off-white. The head seems to be holding quite well to start off with. In the nose I'm finding a combination of soft pine, sweetish & grainy malt, sweet red berries, and delicate citrus. It's pretty nice! On to the flavor... well, it's pretty much exactly the same. I'm glad they went easy on the Chinook because the soft pine note that it has is quite nice and I feel as if they'd gone any heavier it would have covered up the other notes. Speaking of which, there's an almost strawberry note to it that's really unique and quite pleasant across the middle. Then there's some citrus, which I'm seeing as mainly orange. It's labeled as having 75 IBUs but it comes across softer than that, although it still remains dry in the finish. The alcohol has barely any presence. It's softly piney, mildly peppery, and subtly earthy. All in all I think it's really nicely balanced from start to finish. In the mouth it's medium bodied and smooth. The lacing didn't quite live up to the head retention but I think it still deserves a 4.25 out of 5. Maybe not, but what the hell, why not give it the nod? I have only one other thing to note on this beer, which I probably wouldn't even have noticed had I not recently been working with dried Mexican peppers - it seems to have a kind of dried pepper and spice flavor that arises in the lingering finish. It's a little earthy, somewhat fruity, and peppery and spicy. Interesting. I honestly wasn't expecting this to be as good as it is. I thought it would be a bit more bombastic and heavy handed but it's actually quite refined. I'll have to check back in on some of the other Rogue beers that I've tasted in the past to see if maybe they've smoothed out everything. Nicely done!
