not sure if this is just their famed chocolate stout with orange added, or if its a new beer entirely, but its delicious, among our favorites from a visit to the newport taproom. its maybe a little lighter looking and feeling than the original, but the flavors are big and bold, tangerine and dark chocolate, together the whole way in both aroma and flavor, an unexpected find here for summer, but i am glad we did! deep brown color here and no apparent viscosity, short of black, with an average off white head. the citrus pops in the nose, almost an essential oil thing, and to me more obviously tangerine than orange specifically, which is cool. an almost irish stout base it seems, i smell some familiar yeast, maybe just from other rogue beers, and a little of that earthy ashy low end, but its not aggressively roasty to me. the flavor is awesome, great cohesion between the orange and chocolate elements, a little hersheys sweetness in the middle but more high cacao dark chocolate, bitter like that without the richness, full of minerals and not super decadent. the citrus cuts in with a little acidity, definite chocolate oranges on christmas vibes on the finish, a hint of coffee, light licorice maybe too, some bready almost english yeast now, and just the lightest finishing sweetness. its cool because the flavors marry so well but also because the body is light but the base beer is also flavorful, this is drinkable (i dont mind it being a little thinner) and well made, smartly done, nicely proportioned, and i appreciate the low alcohol, not too heavy for summer drinking. delicious.
