There's some reasons for heading to the George IV Pub (slash-Scharer's Little Brewery) in Picton, and they all involve the delicious beers they brew.

The place itself is quite modest. It's an old-style country pub, really. It looks like the claustrophobic English pubs you see in British TV shows which I'm not sure exist in real life.

My girlfriend and I dropped in on the way from Sydney to Canberra, to pick up some Scharer's Lager (one of my favourites). The day was rainy and cold, and inside the pub they were overcompensating, with heating that made you swelter. Through a glass window in the main room of the hotel you can see their German copper brewing kettle.

Pleasant really. Traditional. Rather forgettable. The fact that they brew such great beers there is a blessing for what would otherwise be rather nondescript. The fact that Scharer's goes off the more you leave it is a compelling reason to drink it fresh at the brewery.

Worthwhile for the beer.
