Tasted as a seasonal at the Wig & Pen.

I was intrigued by the written description: beechwood smoked malt, German black malt, and wheat yeast. No mention of actual "wheat" being used.

Is Weizen so named because of the grain or the yeast ?

Anyhow, it does indeed smell & taste like smokey bacon. Maybe some 'fleshiness' coming from the wheat yeast, as too some tartness. Not "wheaty" per se.

Not a bad drop.

Had this at the same festival as Ben Connery, thanks to the chick at the Brissy Beer Festival who gave us a jug of this, much appreciated, coz its quite a nice beer. Smoked aroma and flavour as the name suggests. Lightly roasty, and a bit tart and sweet (i guess from the weizen beer aspect of it). Pretty tasty, but i am in agreement that this doesn't compare to the smoked beers of Bamberg. But well done for an aussie brewer to give it a go, bout time.

I had this at the National Festival of Beers in Brisbane. I like a hefeweizen and had enjoyed their Amber version so was interested to try this one.
The head was reasonable but it was in a plastic cup so can't expect too much. The aromas and flavours were like nothing I had experienced. The malt and wheat tastes you would expect were there but the smoked, chocolate and wheat malts they describe as being used gives a flavour of, and I'm not kidding here, bacon or pork. ALmost everyone who tried this beer with me gave the same reaction. A meaty beer.
Strange as it sounds, this was an excellent beer. Lovely strong flavours. Admittedly I only drank one so it may not last as a session beer...
As a side note my wife, who's a vegetarian, didn't like it when she tried it...
