Berliner Weisse Review
This was offered with mango or blackcurrant syrup. I chose to sample it straight, with no syrup.
Pale, cloudy lemon yellow. Filmy head. Minimal carbonation. It looks like chilled lemon juice. There's more lemony goodness coming.
Nose is quite yeasty, with little fragrance. Not much to note, although it was served at near freezing temperature, which may account for it. I would have let it warm, but it was too refreshing, and it was too hot outside.
Taste is deliciously tart, genuine taste of lemon juice, ending quite yeasty. It has an unfortunate aftertaste of selzer water (something you could probably hide with syrup), and I can imagine a much more robust example of the style.
Still, it's a wonderfully refreshing beer to have on a hot day. A bizarre experience, but something I'd definitely try again.
