When I tasted Baeren's Apple Lager, I stated that I would readily try another brew of theirs as available. Low and behold, on my last trip to Tanakaya, they had a large stock of Baeren Bitter. B/B - 06.03.04 (which if I understand right, is April 3rd, 2006, only a week or so after I made the purchase).
This one poured out a really attractive looking bottom, transparent and bright amber color with an OK, thin head that rapidly dissipated.
Initial smell was STRONG butterscotch/diacetyl, light and crisp fruit presence (fresh apples?), and a strong soapy/chalky aroma as well.
Diacetyl presence was strong in the taste, too, but sweet and buttery. Crisp, with strong carbonation and a soapy feel on the tongue. Light to moderate bitterness but not too high. Also, cloying spices lingered around in the background.
Enjoyable and refreshing brew, but perhaps the finish was a bit too slick. Bitterness was not overwhelming, but pleasantly lingered on for a while. I'm not well experienced with Bitters, but definitely worth a try and rated above average. Kanpai!
