500mL bottle thanks to Beermasons.
Deep mahogany with a two-finger light tan head that recedes audibly at first before slowing to leave hints of lacing and a slightly raised ring.
Serious malt action. Lots of dark fruits, toasted and fortified character. Rich aromas of muscatels, toffee fondue and fruit cake, with roasted coffee beans, aniseed and biscuity notes coming and going over the top.
More roasty, and borderline burnt. Notes of scorched caramel, burnt nuts, coffee, ash and some fresh relief from the clean and spicy hop character.
Light to medium body, with medium carbonation and a lingering tea-like bitterness.
Nose was promising, but the overbearing roastiness of the flavour profile was not really to my liking.

Bottle courtesy of beermasons and pours a burnt copper hue which leaves a two finger wispy head and some nice lacing, the smell is roasted dark malts, dark expresso, burnt toffee and milk chocolate, the mouthfeel is just under medium bodied and could be thicker with tastes of milk chocolate, candied wheat, caramel candy, milky coffee and finished with a fruity coffee hoppy bitterness and overall its nice but i wouldnt rush out for it anytime soon cheers.

Rich, rounded bread aromas with notes of honey. Lots of melanoidins. Just a hint of toasty nuttiness. For me it smells just a wee bit cloying.
Good clarity. Brown. Nice, big, creamy light tan head. Decent head retention and nice lacing.
Rich and toasty. Plenty of nuttiness here to complement the bready malt character. Not overly sweet with a nice drying finish. Just a hint of chocolate possibly betraying the use of non-traditional malts.
Medium body with moderate carbonation. Spot on really but it does feel a little gassy.
A tasty example of the Munich Dunkel. Well executed except for a couple of minor flaws.

Appearance- A deep brown almost black, with red amber highlights. A deep thick tan head crowns the beer and a little carbonation evident.
Smell- A really nice roasted wheat nose with some ~cherry hints. Okay barely fruity in the nose. A great bold smell though out the entire glass.
Taste/Mouthfeel- A smooth lower carbonation with a deep roasted flavor and some sweetness peaking through of various types from fruity to caramel.
Drinkability- Really good for both the style and it lends itself to some definitive cool weather "session-ability".
Summary- The best beer from the brewery hands down. Seek out a bottle of this or even better yet- on tap.

My 16 oz bottle was hand carried back from Christchurch by good friends, but allowed to settle for almost 6 weeks before opening.
Deep ruby color poured excitingly with a bold, thick, off-white head that hollowed out quickly. The head disappeared after two swigs. Rich roasted malty, yet sweet flavor with undertones of dark fruit, yet not approaching a rauch nor even a hint of smoke, just boldness.
Notes of caramel in the mouth and a long lasting dry malty feel in the aftertaste. Awareness of hops, but not overbearing. Finish is dry and aftertaste is long lasting.
This is a great medium-bodied beer, a quintessential addition to the New Zealand style German Beers. Following Reinheitsgebot, the Munich Malts used in this beer require Hallertauer hops to mimic several local beers in Munich and pull it off quite well.
Repours produce an incredible layer of carbonation under the surface of a thinkening head. Quite impressive to watch.

Ruby red with a darkness topped with a dense, ringy, murky off white head. Toasted, lightly roasted malt shows singed caramel sweetness with licorice, faint tobacco, and some raisins. Nice. Sweet and toasted malt. Blackberries meld with licorice with a touch of rye bread. Finish is yeasty bitter. Medium-bodied. A nice version of the a style minimally represented in NZ.
