On-draught in Wellington. $10 NZD per 300ml.

Unfiltered and naturally conditioned, our Smokey Porter encapsulates all the intense malt flavours of an Imperial Porter and adds to them with the addition of Manuka-smoked malt. Chocolate & espresso aromas abound. This brew is velvet smooth, with a lush full creamy mouthfeel. Residual sweetness is balanced by punchy coffee flavours with preside over wood fire smoke. 2018 Beer & Cider Award Gold Medal and 2022 NZBA Gold Medal.

Has a subtle smokiness, never tending harsh or acrid. The malt used (manuka/myrtle smoked malt) gives it a bit more specialized character than plain ole Weyermann beechwood smoked malt. Dark malt sweetness keeps the smokey bitterness in check.

Burnt wood, a kiss of roast, a hint of velvety coffee, creamy milk.

Mouthfeel is creamy and soft, cushioning the bitter smokiness from the palate and raising drinkability. Near perfectly carbonated. Smooth, even wet. One of the more approachable textures you'll find in a smoked porter.

I'm a whore for a well executed smoked beer, and this is one of them. Balanced with a subtle smoke presence, but robust enough a porter I reckon it would win over porter fans who don't fancy themselves appreciators of smoked beer.

I wouldn't mind them dialing up the smoke and the manuka herbal flavour even more - and it would do well with more roasty character - but it's easily the best of its ilk I've tried in New Zealand. A must-try for smoked porter enthusiasts in the Southern Hemisphere.

B+ / VERY GOOD
