Pours a darkish brown colour with a big beige head that foams and rather quickly dissolves to a thin lace. Stickiness on the glass is moderate to minimal.
The aroma blends spices, fruit notes, licorice and, quite simply, trees. It's not really pine scented as you would get from hops, but more so spruce-like.
The flavour is essentially more of the same, but it also adds some wood notes into the mix, mostly toward the finish where it blends with the licorice a bit. The fruit notes and tree (even floral at times) flavours hit you more at the start of each sip. Overall flavours are a bit lighter than the aroma would lead on, but they are still quite nice and well balanced. Mouthfeel is light bodied and refreshing, but not watery.
It's nice to see a style that's not brewed that often and that I've only sampled a few other times. I'd say a good job was done here and it makes for an interesting but somewhat logical choice as a winter seasonal. Buyer beware: a brand new growler plus a fill will run you $36 on this one with a refill of an already owned growler running about $27...yikes.
Anyway, this is certainly worth a try if it's on while your at the Tun.
