Pours a pretty nice looking dark brown to near black colour. Hints of a lighter shade of brown come through when held up to light. Head is surprisingly minimal and leaves virtually no residue on the glass.
The aroma is coffee up front and all the way through, but blended nicely with earthy malt and a bit of chocolate sweetness. 'Tis basic overall, but balanced and not overpowering with the coffee, which is nice.
The flavour is much like the aroma, but with a bit more punch (and a balanced punch at that). Coffee still leads the way but it's bitterness mixes well with the chocolate, which is less sweet/creamy and more bitter here. Rugged, dry earthy malt comes through toward the middle and end of each sip and there is also a slight touch of hop notes at the finish. Very faint, but there nonetheless. There's also a nice burnt/roasted flavour (mostly from the coffee) that seeps in through each sip as well. Mouthfeel is a touch lighter than hoped for, being medium to full bodied. I would have preferred more of a straight on full bodied stout with a bit more creaminess, but it still wasn't bad in the end.
There seems to be some sort of flavoured stout series going on at the Tun as this is the third (I think) that I've sampled from them in recent months, and is by far the best. It works on many levels and is an easy recommendation.
