Pours a hazy orange-ish to yellow color with an off white head. In the aroma, a hint of orange citrus and a cinnamon like spice. In the taste, orange citrus, big wheat notes and some dry clove. A small bite and lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry orange citrus in the aftertaste. Quite pedestrian with the sweeter context of orange, good, but just over average.

Review from notes taken on 7/30/10.

Served in an oversized mug, this brew appears a cloudy light orangish yellow color, a bit darker than what I remember from previous years and other examples of the style. A thin white cap of foam receeds fairly quickly leaving some legs of lacing about the glass.

The aroma is a decent 50/50 split of cloves and banana. Nothing too overkill about it, it is enjoyable with some light fruity notes that are evident as well.

The taste of this hefeweizen includes light notes indicated by the aroma: banana and clove with a dry spiced taste that comes across a bit like nutmeg. A light grainy flavor is left inside the mouth that lingers.

The body of this brew is light with a low level of carbonation which is not typical for the style. It needs more carbonation for a better feel and increased drinkability.

Poured a hazy medium straw hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and good lacing.

The smell featured balmy clove and banana aromas.

The taste consisted of a chewy wheat malt, some wheat spice and a full array of yeast esters.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a full flavored and seemingly authentic hefe.

A - A bright, cloudy, golden orange body...small fluffy white head...decent lacing

S - Strong aromas of your typical banana, clove, and some yeast...a little on the sweet side

T - Again a little on the sweet side...but a solid taste...full banana flavor...the spices kick in and take away the sweetness...but in a good way...also picking up some wheat and yeast flavors

M - Medium bodied...refreshing and creamy

D - This is spot on for a hefe...but it's not the best hefe I've had...but with being from Harrisburg it's pretty tasty...a good beer for the hot and humid days

Pours a nice orange tinted straw color with some decent head and lacing. Very deep straw/wheat scent with a nice spicy nose. Excellent wheat malt flavor with fantastic banana flavors, with a nice slight, smooth noble hop finish to add just a bit of pepper to it. Goes down smooth, this was a great beer at their breakfast special.

I had this one on tap.

Poured a hazy golden color with a smaller sized white head. Aromas of bananas, cloves, and some yeast (hey, its a Hefe!). Tastes of bananas, cloves, and some wheat. Stronger spicy finish. It wasn't a bad Hefe but then again, nothing made this one stand out.

Notes from 09/19/04.

Pours a light golden color with some thin fluffy white head.

Mostly a fruity banana scent, and yeast.

The taste is potent banana, and again yeast.

This is has a light-bodied feel, sort of creamy with some prickly carbonation.

This is a pretty easy drinker. A tasty beer, although I wouldn't drink more than maybe two, it is a little too sweet for my liking.

i haven't had much of a chance to sample what ABC has to offer, but was happy to get the chance at that this past weekend's "eat your wheaties" fest at the south philly tap room. definitely one of the best true to form american versions of a german hefeweizen that i've ever had, and was absolutely delicious on a hot and humid day. definitely has the trademark flavor of german hefeweizens; cloves and banana flavors are quite abundant. the color is even very true to form, which i think is something that a lot of american brewers have a hard time doing (or they just don't care). if you're looking for a solid american "replacement" to a paulaner or franziskaner, look no further.

I sampled this brew while having lunch with fish113d. The beer is cold and cloudy gold color, kind of like apple cider. Frothy bleached white head fades to a surface layer, leaving tightly packed lattice on the glass. Aroma is cloves and hints of banana with just a bit of bready yeast as well.
First sip reveals a crisp lite body with very fine carbonation.
Flavor is sweet banana, cloves and doughy yeast again. The beer gives no hint of ABV and is crisp and refreshing. A great beer for a hot day. Served without a lemon which I also approve of.
Check it out.

Decent Hefe.. Cloves and a touch of bannana..(How the hell DO you spell that?!) come through mostly. Pretty refreshing, but couldn't drink alot of these do to the spiciness. At least it had some flavor, and it went sooo well with the burger and onion rings at the ABC in Camp Hill!! (Damn, I should do a review on the onion rings! They were off the hook good!) Anyway, I'd recommend the Hefe, and of course, especially in the summertime, when it's brewed and most refreshing. Oh, orange-ie color and typical Hefe cloudiness. I'm sorry that I don't mention all the other jazz about brews when I review, but really, it all comes down to TASTE, right friends? Sure, smell has a bit to do with it, but really...taste is numero uno in my book. Sorry I don't describe more though. I'll work on it. SAAALUTE and cheers my BA friends!

Decanted from the growler cold into a wheat glass.
A - A hazy golden w/ amber highlights and a very thin white head.

S - Banana and clove are big aromas right off. Huge scents w/ a subtle hint of caramel in the midst of fresh banana odor.

M - Creamy w/ spice and light fruitiness and a mix of pepper and fruit in the finish. A bit fuller than some hefes I have had.

T - Tasty wheat fullness in flavor and a bit of spicy and tropical fruit tastes with malty sweetness and a caramel almost buttery feel. A gentle lemony zip from wheaty ale yeast with a nutty malt, but the finish is smooth and creamy.

D - A tasty hefe w/ lots of authentic character, not quite as effervescent as the great and nowhere near the head retention, but a tasty quaffable wheat. I would definitely try this again, but I wouldn't want a session of these. I used the last glass of the growler to steam some brats, which was a good choice.

Sampled on tap at the ABC brewery in Harrisburg, PA.

Served in a standard pint glass. Body is hazy golden yellow with minimal head. Lots of foamy lace.

Intense sweet banana scent. Very full bodied aroma.

The flavor was not what I expected. Quite spicy, as one would expect from a hefe, but it was not a traditional hefe spice profile. Very tangy edge, and something like cinnamon. Not bad, but it didn't grab me as great either.

This is a growler of Appalachian Brewing Co.'s Hinterland Hefe Weizen, bottled on the same date as my initial review (see my profile for said review). The ale is chilled.

Appearance: The ale has a yellow-orange color and is very hazy. There is a nice head on the beer that lasts through the pint. [Note that this is taken verbatim from the first review]

Smell: This beer is brewed in the german style of a hefe (as opposed to an American version which is really a pale wheat ale). The aroma is all esters, with those pesky banana and clove aromas making themselves known. [Note that this is taken verbatim from the first review]

Taste: The beer has lost a bit of its carbonation. Despite that, there is still a strong estery flavor thanks to the yeast. The banana and clove nuances are quite good, albeit reserved.

Mouthfeel: The tartness of the wheat is a pleasant change of taste. The yeast gives this beer one hell of a taste.

Drinkability: My intention was to house the growler tonight, but I am going to Belgium Comes to Cooperstown tomorrow, so I need to be on my A game.

On tap at Harrisburg location

Pours a hazy straw color with a creamy white head. Slight lacing on the glass.

Aroma of banana and clove and a hint of malt. Smells great.

Nice banana/clove/fruity taste upfront followed by a clean malty aftertaste. As good or better than some of Germany's best.

Mouthfeel is light and smooth. Nice zip from the carbonation.

Super easy to drink. A qualty hefe.

This arrived with a very thin head, approaching wispiness. It was deep lemon-yellow in color and very cloudy. It had a light nose of banana esters. The mouthfeel was very full and creamy. There were tastes of banana and spice, especially clove and cinnamon, on the palate. The finish had what Lew referred to in his seminar on wheat beers as "the cut" - a tangy bite that lingers well after swallowing. I am admittedly NOT a fan of this style, but I found this to be quite enjoyable, especially after a grueling ride in the back of the van from State College.

On tap at The Drafting Room in Springhouse, PA. Hazy, cloudy, stirred up pour with scant white head ring.

Cloves and ripe bananas meets some degree of wild flowers & meadow scents reminiscent of a Belgian Sour.

Doughy, cloves, ripe bananas & cherries. Citrousy with wheat notes. Soft palatable orange juice-watery like flavors. Short clean aftertaste. Lemony notes.

Not a recommended all-nighter.. Medium to full bodied for the style. Creamy.

Last swigs: Big fruity mix, cloudy hefe & cool whip easy.

Beer is good. Happy local beering.

No real head, just a bit of small bubbles around the edges with a bit of cover. Even giving it a swirling... nada. Very cloudy and unfiltered cider colored.
Intense clove scents, fresh tobacco, banannas... Smooth taste. Hits you with a massive amount of bananna, then some citrus bite, bit of spices. Very drinkable. I do get a bit of ABC's "house flavors" which I have not been a big fan of, floating around in here, but they are not very overwhelming as in the rest of their offerings. So far this has been the best of their bunch as far as I have seen.

Served as a 6 oz. sample at ABC. The color was a hazy gold, with a ring of white head. The smell was a strong banana/clove. The taste was a very strong clove/banana, with just a bit of the wheat tang. Mouthfeel was well-carbed. As for drinkability, this is one that I could session on very nicely.

A true surprise, and amongst the best beers that I'd had at ABC. A strong and delicious hefe, and a real treat. Absolutely one that I would have again.

Served as part of a sampler tray at their brewery. This one poured a cloudy and dull looking golden color. This is a decent hefe. Spicy aroma and flavor. Strawberry bubblegum, banana and spices like nutmeg and cloves are in there, too. The light malt body makes this beer goes down easy and on the whole is spicy, light and refreshing. Very good.

Great.
Fruity aroma with hints of lemon and apple and a hint of vanillla richness that comes out as the beer warms in your glass. Small nice head with a little lace left behind. An easy drink. Worth taking home in the growler

Cloudy gold body with a white head that lasts.

A tea-like (as in Lipton, not Leoni. I have no idea what Tea Leoni smells like, but I'd give her a 4 or so on appearance alone) and estery nose. The flavor matches the nose, with a tea-like, vanilla-y, wheaty roundness while the banana and (lesser) clove esters hide in the background, Later in the sip a hint of apple appears before it all dissolves into a nice, wheat-malty finish. Nice effort.
