On tap @ the Harrisburg location on 10/9/09. Served in a mug.
Pours a deep, clear, coppery amber, with a thin covering of brite-white foam. Retains with a thin ring around the edges, leaving some light spotty lacing back. The aroma is generally pretty sweet and malty. There is a gentle smokey roastiness to this, along with a bit of green citrus and floral hops. Decent.
The taste has a big malty sweetness to it, but doesn't get cloying, with enough roastiness and a rather sturdy dose of bittering hops helping pull things back. The smokiness of the malts is more pronounced here in the taste, but isn't overly assertive, instead just lingering mostly in the finish with some residual sweetness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm feel and a prickly carbonation that helps all of that heavy sweetness go down. Not sure of the ABV, but it felt around the 7% range based on the beefiness of the body. The alcohol itself was well hid though.
This was good. Some Bocks often have a hard time keeping my attention for long but this one worked for me. The hops and smoke kept things interesting and helped mix things up with all of the heavy maltiness. A most worthy home-brew contest winner this year.

2009 Homebrew winner
A - Served with a darker copper body but it still had some clarity...a tan head measured about 1.5 fingers and retained nicely...slowly falling into a spotty cap...some lacing
S - The nose was really watered down for me...but I was able to pick up some caramel malts
T - This beer had two different tastes going on...when it was cold the roasted malts really stood out...they were flavorful presenting both toffee and caramel flavors and you got the "roasted" flavor as well...then as the beer warmed it changed direction...a lot of the yeast started to come out...there was a buttery bread flavor...now if that could have been paired with the caramel it would have been good
M - Medium bodied boarding on light...a little to thin for me but still refreshing
D - I like the competition ABC does and then produce the winner...a decent bock to try for something new at ABC
