On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad
03/29/14 - Full pint

Listed at 8.5% ABV

A: Lightly burnished pale brass look with some fine clarity to the body. Effervescent with a dense finger width of ivory suds rests for a few moments before settling out to a fine halo. Some light speckled rings of lace decorate the glass all the way down the drink.

S: Super fruity hop aromas are all tropical and shit with mangoes, orange, apricot, and light pines. Touch of underlying pale malt sweetness there. Nothing else really coming through. Very hoppy with a nice tropical fruit medley.

T: Bright with fruity hops like peach/apricot, mango, and orange citrus with a dash of pine and tropic flora. Has a nice bitter hop punch that really wakens up the palate. Touch of caramel malt sweetness there to keep things in good balance and finishes out with a bit of spice. Alcohol is a really well disguised for being 8.5%ABV with only a small trace noticeable. The beer is resinous but very clean and well crafted. Tasting like a very nice hop blend with some Citra coming through. Really enjoyable.

M: Moderate to lighter body with a nice frothy texture from the spritzy carbonation. Has a big drying effort at the finish coupled with a highly resinous hop linger. Gives a bit of cottonmouth feel in the end.

D: Another great DIPA from Pizza Port. Didn’t strike me as “off the chain” and won’t etch out Poorman’s or anything but there are some really enjoyable hop flavors here. Super drinkable given that it is well balanced while remaining hop forward. Just how the west coast style do.

Thanks to Stan for sharing this one at Instant Replay in Canoga Park, CA.

Pours a clear honey orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, herbal hop, and slight metallic aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and brown sugar flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some solid flavors but the smell is a bit off for some reason.
