A mostly yellow, slightly orange pour. Good 1/2" white head. The aroma drops all those fruity notes throughout. Orange, tangerine, pine, mango, floral, its all in here.

Light body malt bill, good dank resin that isn't heavy. Strength is just right, not boozy. Everything works very well here, one of my favorite ipas in the world.

Good backstory to the name of the beer too. Herbal hop mouthfeel, lots of tangerine tastes. Easy to see why this was a gold medal winner at GABF.

A: An impatient pour from the pitcher yielded a massive cake of khaki colored suds. Took a few minutes for it to die down to a manageable film and top off. Has a darker caramel amber body with good clarity to it. Looks quite delicious with waves of sticky cling climbing across the glass.

S: Very floral hops on the nose with bright notes of tangerine, pine, and peach/apricot. There is a little Sensi herb going on as well albeit not incredibly potent. Lightly bready pale malts underneath. Smells freshly hopped with lots of lovely candied citrus notes.

T: Tangerine hops with resinous pine, florals, and a touch of the green herbage on the finish. Generous amounts of fresh hops give a nice upper moderate level of bitterness and a real resinous linger to the beer. There is a comforting amount of bready malt sweetness at the base bringing everything together. Has as great balance to it considering and the alcohol is really well masked throughout. This one just really hits the spot.

M: The feel is moderate to light with a nice even level of carbonation that gives a smooth lush consistency. There is a good amount of hop bitterness without becoming too sharp on the palate and a dry resinous finish.

D: Pseudo is not exactly mind blowing these days but it definitely has some great attributes and is very well put together. Nicely balanced with solid crushability factor.

The pitcher did not stand a chance.

On tap at Pizza Port in San Clemente, CA.

Pours a hazy gold with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a herbal hop flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

On-tap at Pizza Port San Clemente on November 6th, 2011. Pint glass.

A - Standard IPA golden color. Thin, white, very foamy head. Good retention and lacing. Lots of carbonation kicking up from the sides of the glass. Bodes well-enough.

S - Considerable hop character. Good mix of big pine cones and exotic fruits. Pineapple. Sugar cane. Maybe a bit of caramel.

T - Aligned with the aroma. Hop oils, more lemon, lime, and pineapple mixed with a sugary sweet note. Grapefruit zest, but not hugely tart. Short-medium finish that I didn't find terribly dry.

M - Light-medium body, appropriate carbonation. Nothing stands out here but it's adequate.

D - Regrettably, this was the only brew I had a chance to try on my one visit to the Port. For an IPA, it's very much on the same level as many DIPA's I've tried and satisfied my west-coast craving.

on tap at FFF had along side a zombiedust.

pour was a bit clearer then the zombie dust but was quickly realized as the terminal seems to be a bit lower. this in turn doesn't give it a latitude that i like but has the very brisk feel to it. almost boozy separation i would say at one point. note of exotic citrus in the nose along with the well dry hopped fair. nose is a bit nutty malt dry ender like that of chico yeast. pine, pine, pine, more savory palate compared to the nose.

10 oz. draft in a mini-nonic pint at the FFF brewpub.

Saturated orange body, bright clarity, thin layer of stiff offwhite foam on top. Creamy surface texture, some lace, good head retention that lasted for the duration of the glass.

Dried orange and grapefruit peel, zesty and citrusy, some dense caramel malt sweetness behind that, which came through more in the taste.

Big caramel malt again, bready with toffee notes, bitter herbal hop resin, grapefruit peel and pith. Moderately dry and bitter, piney with herbal notes in the aftertaste. Medium bodied and somewhat hefty on the palate. Not bad, and a solid west coast IPA, but it's got nothing on the drinkability/hop potency of Wipeout & Mongo.

Served in a half pint nonic.

Orangey golden with some amber hues in there. One finger off-white head leaves huge sheets of lacing and has great retention.

Smells hugely bitter. Giant bitter hops make this smell (and taste) less malty than the color would indicate. The flavor holds the bitterness that the nose implied, but there is a little dry roasty malt character here too. The hops come across as citrusy and spicy with a bite of piney resin in the lingering bitterness. Lots and lots of bitterness.

The body is solid: firm, yet delicate. Just shy of medium, but with ample carbonation to allow for a bubbly and slightly prickly feel. A little oily feel on the lingering bitter finish.

I like it. I like it quite a bit, and the only complaint I could register is that I get a little boozy alcohol in the finish-- it's a dry astringent alcohol note that hurts the overall experience and the flavor rating to a small degree.

A: This beer is amber in color with about a finger of white head.

S: A nice sweet citrus aroma up front with plenty of pineapple and other tropical fruits. There is just a bit of caramel along with some bread. Strong pine notes on the back end.

T: Somewhat surprisingly, there is sweet toffee up front. But, that is quickly replaced by tropical fruits and pungent grapefruit (and other citrus notes). Overall, sweet fruits are prevalent and there is a mild pine bitterness.

M: Medium in both body and carbonation.

O: Very easy to put down a couple glasses of this stuff. One of Pizza Port SC's better beers.

On tap 6/19/11 at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Reviewed from notes:

A: Slightly hazy with a finger and half of head. Good head retention with a layer of head that remains after dissipation.

S: Crisp grapefruit and a little bit of pine in the background. Some lighter malt in the background but the nose is dominated by the hops.

T: Bitter from front to end. The pine astringency is fantastic. Backed with just enough of a caramel malt that keeps this one from tasting like burning pine tree. The end of this one is very dry. The dry pine after taste continues to linger.

M: carb level and lightness of this beer make it feel top notch in my mouth.

O: This beer wins over and over with every sip. There is no wonder why it won at GABF last year. I wish this beer was at one of the closer pizza port locations. Hopefully they bottle this one.

Backed up the on-tap experience with two growlers for CBI Craft Beer tasting, $22 each, procured at Pizza Port San Clemente, 8.12.11 tasted the next day.

Not much difference from the on-tap review (see below) but opening the growler produced an olfactory experience few beers can match, a truly great smelling beer. Great citrus, tropical and and some piney notes, balanced by fairly light and dry malt profile. Taste mirrors nose. Medium mouthfeel with good effervescence, better than the on-tap version. One of the world's best IPAs at this ABV range, the two growlers were gone in 15 minutes!

Another Pizza Port offering from jodan. Shared at Sean's 30th birthday party. Served in a plastic cup.

A - A finger of white foam settles to some spotty lace and a thin cap. The body is a transparent golden color.

S - This is one of those IPAs that somehow communicates bitterness through the aroma. Intensely pine, grapefruit rind, and perhaps a kiss of lightly toasted sugars in the periphery. Definitely still very West Coast, as there's minimal sweetness to be found here.

T - Again, it's an intense, and borderline brash, mix of pine, herbs, floral notes, and grapefruit pith and peel. Another palate bruiser with very little sweetness.

M - Again, super dry finish, medium body, moderate carbonation, and oodles of hop oils and resins left behind.

D - Drinks a little faster than the Poor Man's, mainly due to the lower alcohol and slightly smaller body. That being said, I'd have a few pints of either offering if I could get out to SoCal in the near future. One of the rare occasions where I preferred the DIPA to the IPA.

Thanks to Alex for bringing this growler to Sean's 30th Birthday Extravaganza. Served in a snifter.

Pours a nice light copper color with a good white head and a bit of spotty lacing on the way down. The nose brings forward a pretty good contingent of hops, mostly floral and citrus. Light malt in the background. The flavor hits hard with some citrus hops and perhaps a bit of a tropical character. Floral hops are there too. Light to medium body with a dry, bitter finish. A nice brew, but didn't hold up well when compared with the Poor Man's. Still, a very enjoyable brew.

Reviewed from notes. This was one 4.5 oz. taster of a flight of four I sampled at PP San Clemente in late May, 2011.

Great Beer! I really like this brew. Pungent and flavorful to say the least. At one point, I felt like I was drinking flowers (is it crazy to say I got lilacs and roses?) This is a yellow brew, very bright and bubbly. It is clean on the glass, but nice and medium on the palette.

Malt is a formality here. The hops are added at the right amount at each stage of the brewing process. It achieves a great balance of hop flavors, aroma, and bitterness.

If I lived close to here, this would be the beer I'd crave constantly.

My first beer at PP San Clemente. For someone who lives 10 minutes away, I surely don't visit enough.

Poured a fairly dark copper color into my pint glass, but when held up to a light, it magically lightens in color to a more yellow/copper!

Tons of hops on the nose. Piney, but not that cat urine piney/Simcoe smell from Stone. Piney, and citrusy.

More of the same on the mouth. Piny, citrusy, but thank god they left out the cat piss flavor. Stone should take a memo from these guys. Great bitterness, great hoppiness without being overpowering.

Mouthfeel was spot on. Carbonation was spot on, and I definitely wouldn't have carbed it any further.

Very drinkable. Only reason I didn't drink more was because so much good stuff was on tap tonight!!

Cask service via hand-pump into a shaker pint glass at Pizza Port in San Clemente.

A: Clear, light amber color with just a thin layer of white foam residue (although the glass was served very full). Moderate lacing remains on the glass.

S: Muted herbaceous, floral, and faint citrus aromas are detectable. The smell gives the impression of being hoppy, though not intensely so.

T: Begins off-dry, intensely fruity with equal parts grapefruit and orange flesh--very juicy. Hints of diacetyl and acidity round out flavors, making for an intensely flavorful beginning. Creeping sweetness peaks in the middle, where robust toasted malt is detected amidst fading hop aromatics. It finishes moderately bitter and more dry, with nuanced herbaceous qualities.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, resinous and slightly syrupy, with no detectable carbonation on the palate.

D: For a beer whose reputation is starting to precede itself, the flavor of Pseudo IPA will catch you off-guard. The intensity of the aromatic hops here are both high and pleasure-inducing--similar to The Bruery's Humulus Lager--but are accompanied brilliantly by malt and yeast metabolites. While not as dry and clean as some other prominent West Coast IPAs such as Sculpin or Blind Pig, the overall approachability and ability to generate interest possessed by this beer seems very strong. I almost cannot wait until my next encounter with Pseudo IPA.

First Review (of hopefully many)

Poured from a growler I picked up at lunch today at Pizza Port.

On par with Pliny & Alesmith IPA, as a top favorite now.

Could of used more head, but that might be the pour from the growler. Can't wait to try this right out of the tap.

Really easy to drink and great taste. Hoppy delight!

Freeh batch enjoyed at San Clemente. What an excellent beverage. They have a real winner of a recipe here, and flawless execution. Deserving of its GABF gold.


Consumed on 9/4/2009 at Pizza Port San Clemente in a pint glass. I was told by the bartender that this is the first batch of this beer. Pours dark honey with a frothy white head (one inch). The beer has good retention and lacing.

I'm greeted by a big Centennial hop nose. Loads of grapefruit are present with some orange pith and a bit of resinous pine. There's a touch of sweetness and a light crackery malt profile. This is a textbook West Coast IPA nose. Excellent.

The beer has a high medium level of bitterness and strong pine and grapefruit notes. The alcohol is well hidden and the crackery malt is all but enveloped by the illustrious hops. The finish is dry and bitter, with lingering pine and citrus. Again, excellent.

The beer is perfectly carbonated on draft and it's light medium bodied. The mouthfeel is dry and sticky. A great IPA from Port San Clemente.

Had this on tap at Pizza Port in San Clemente. I was talking to an employee here (he wasn't working at the time, he was just hanging out with a friend) and he told me I must try this before leaving. Pours a cloudy orange colour with thick head and nice lacing. Tons of pine and grapefruit hops on the nose, is this really a single IPA? The juicy hop flavour is just so fresh and jumps out at you. One of the top IPA's I've ever had and clearly the best of my afternoon at the brewpub.

Chilled growler into a glass, courtesy of Chris (largadeer) and Ted (chswimmer, RIP). Thanks, guys.

A: Pours a clear, copper-amber body capped with a generous off-white foam. The first pour of the growler had 3 fingers of head, which retained well and left sticky lace down the sides as it retreated. It lost nothing here, as far as I can tell.

S: When cold, the smell was muted, carrying mostly pine and (according to Chris) citrus, but I couldn't detect the latter. When it warmed, and in particular when I finished off the growler the next day, the aroma became much more expressive, and I finally saw what Chris was talking about. It's more grapefruit than straight citrus, particular with a small rind-like quality. A small floral presence. Couldn't pick up any malt.

T: The nose captures this one very well. Grapefruit pith and rind, pine needles. Small orange peel presence. When cold, it had more straight hop bitterness than flavor. When warm (and, again, the next day), the bitterness is still noticeable, but it is well adorned by hop flavor that lowers the perceived bitterness. Very little malt here to offset it. As in the nose, there's a subtle floral presence in the finish.

M: The beer finishes dry, bitter, with a lingering pine flavor in the aftertaste. Doesn't feel heavy at all. The carbonation is great for the style, even out of a growler.

D: I really came around on this beer. Finishing half a growler was quite easy. Really good stuff.

Grabbed a growler of this from Pizza Port San Clemente.

Nice appearance on this one, clear with a copper hue and a large, dense head that leaves sheets of lacing behind.

Smells great; grapefruit and pine with floral undertones, signature San Diego IPA in approach. Little discernible malt.

Quite the palate wrecker for a relatively low ABV beer, this is high on IBUs. It's not all bitterness, however; this beer packs a ton of fresh, resiny hop flavor. Grapefruit and pine are dominant, but there's just enough biscuit-like malt flavor to give it a whisper of balance. The finish is aggressively bitter but very smooth and clean. Very impressive stuff.

What a great IPA.

Pours a very dark burnished orange/amber. Inch or so of off-white head.

Smells like bittered pine with a touch of centennial citrus pith and grapefruit husk.

Taste is supremely bitter and citrus/pine forward. Just an assaulting blast on the palate, and absolutely delicious. Orange husks, tangy spicy grapefruit, and fresh pine needles overlaying all of it. Almost no sweetness to be found. Bitter and acrid on the aftertaste.

Good resiny mouthfeel.

Poured a golden yellow with a half finger of head and left some bubbly lacing sticking to the glass. The aroma was quite pleasent consisting of piney hops, citrus grapefruit, slight tangerine, and some bready malt presence. There was definitely piney hops smacking the palate with citrus grapefruit notes that helped out on the bitter punch alongside slight tangerine accents but a nice bready malt backbone. The brew was medium in body with a good amount of carbonation which had a citrusy, piney, hoppy, bitter, crisp finish. It drank really good and was glad to have tried yet another great hop bomb from pizza port.

On tap at Blue Palms. Served in a nonic.

A: Fairly clear golden body with hues of amber. One inch head. Only a bit of lacing left behind. Slightly oily legs, solid retention with a slim layer of foam lasting throughout.

S: Pineapples and mangos up front. Really solid tropical fruit fragrance. Just a hint of some sweet malts.

T: The taste is resin and pine bitter hops then pineapples, mango and spicy white pepper. Some sweet pale and a hint of caramel malts.. Lingering resin and pine bitterness.

M: The mouthfeel is fairly light with some slick and oily hops. Well carbonated. Spicy, bitter and sweet all at the same time with a refreshing bite on the end.

D: I drank four pints of this. Probably more than I should have, but it was too delicious. Something you should definitely try if you get the chance. I would go as far as calling this the single best IPA I have ever tried.

This was just a great tasting IPA. It smells mostly of cannabis, in both aroma and taste. There is a good malt profile in the taste as well as a grapefruit aroma that is mixed with the cannabis.

Great beer and with a low alcohol level makes it a good secession beer.
