On Tap

The Lost Abbey
San Marcos, CA

Clear gold with nearly no head. This leaves lines of small dots down the pint glass.

Grainy, bready aroma with a bit of pine and mango, but the grain is dominant. Pleasant, but unexciting.

Bold bitterness, very mild fruit, graham cracker, and grains.

Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation.

Disappointing. I prefer regular Mongo. Maybe this had been sitting around for some time.

On-tap at Strong Ale

A: The pour is a cloudy dark orange color with some scattered white foam on top. This beer is pretty lowly carbonated, so not much head was formed.

S: A really surprising amount of fruit on the nose. Good mango notes, but a fair amount of apricot as well. Soon after, the usual powerful pine aromas of Mongo come through.

T: Really intense fruitiness comes through as the sip first hits the tongue. Sweet mango flavor just overwhelms the beer at the start, but gives way to the intensely bitter and piney hop character of Mongo before long. Not all that much citrus going on here, but the beer doesn't really miss it with all the fruit flavor.

M: The body is medium with a fairly low level of carbonation. Almost like a cask pour.

D: This is what I was hoping for with Mango Mama. Probably the only fruited IPA I've had thus far that was actually enjoyable.
