Thanks goes to ArthurPendragon for the growler.

The beer has a typical San Diego IPA appearance: a pale shade of amber that's perfectly clear, topped by a tall frothy cap that clings to the glass and sustains nicely.

The nose has a huge grapefruit presence, mild sweetness, resinous pine, orange flesh, little in the way of malt. Grapefruit is incredibly dominant, but a light breadiness comes out as it warms.

The palate, likewise, has a big juicy grapefruit flavor that transitions into a more resinous and biting finish. Very dry despite the fairly hefty 8%, with little in the way of malt flavor, nothing more than a mild bready foundation. The finish has a punchy, lingering bitterness that avoids astringency. A touch more sweetness on the palate is the only thing I find myself wanting from this; beyond that it's hard to fault. Awesome stuff as usual from PP OB.

On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach in a tulip glass. I believe this is the second batch of this beer.

A: Burnished orange with an inch of foam that lingers for a minute and leaves tendrils of white lacing on the glass.

S: Highly aromatic blend of orange, tangerine, and grapefruit flesh. The citrus is just explosive, blending with pine resin and crackery malt with a dash of caramel. Alcohol isn't apparent in the nose.

T: Bright citrus notes bring orange, tangerine, peach, and grapefruit to mind. The beer is resinous, with a crackery malt profile. There's a smooth but firm moderate bitterness and very little alcohol. Short-lived sweetness is observable midpalate, just enough to ward off EOoPF (Early Onset of Palate Fatigue). Finishes dry and bitter with lingering citrus.

M: Lower medium body with upper moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is dry and sticky.

Overall: This is outstanding. Highly recommended.

Easily one of the best beers I had during my 3 days in San Diego.

Pours a light amber color with a pretty nice white head.

Aromas are very hoppy. Very resiny, kind of caramel malty, with some pine needles and mixed citrus and apricots.

Taste is just like the nose. Very resiny, with bright citrus floral hop flavors. This is a bit on the sweet side, with definite caramel malt flavors. While sweet, I found it to be balanced nicely with the bitterness. Finish is bitter, crisp, and slightly warm.

Mouthfeel is nice and full, not heavy at all.

Overall, I found this to be a top notch DIPA. I think I like it better than Mongo, and that's not a slight against that beer.

On-tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach

A: The pour is amber in color with a finger of white head.

S: A nice citrus note to it with hints of pineapple to go along with the grapefruit. Other fruit notes (perhaps peaches) and some pine make up the rest of the hop character. Slightly malty, though.

T: Somewhat sweet/malty with some light caramel as well as sweet tropical fruits such as pineapple. There is some grapefruit and tangerine along with a fairly mild pine note and bitterness. Just a hint of floral hops.

M: Medium to full in body and medium carbonation.

O: A decent hoppy beer, but a touch on the sweet side for my liking. Still enjoyed my pint, though.

On tap at PP OB. Poured into a pint glass.

Walked in to find this new DIPA on tap. This big brother to While the Wife's Away IPA pours a deep amber color with a finger of tight white bubbles atop it. Decent lacing. The nose is hemp, citrus and pine wih a hint of pale malt. Taste is big citrus and floral hops up front transitioning into a veritable assault of bitterness. Malt tries to assert itself but can't quite get a foothold against the waves of bitter, hoppiness cascading across my palate. Finish is juicy with a lingering bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel tends toward full bodied wih a slick, viscous quality. ABV is well masked by the hops. Carbonation level is medium and lends a nice prickly sensation. Overall this is another great DIPA from Pizza Port. Bitter to the extreme, just the way I like it. Recommended!
