Under a soft, light tan head leaving behind some nice sheeting on the glass, as I was with the red before it I'm also surprised to see this beer's appearance as a clear dark reddish-brown as opposed to *SCHWARZ*.
While I've had the foeder-aged version, I haven't had the base. This unaged, unoaked entry expresses very leafy, fresh tobacco qualities that even verge into herbal sassafras and bitter tree bark, all dried up with a touch of cocoa powder in the finish. Its fluffy froth belies a lighter body that at times exhibits a touch of something medicinal.
While their brown is out of this world, and some of their pilsner work has been very commendable, Voodoo's work in the traditional realm is too often a tad underwhelming. Still, this one's fairly enjoyable even while being a degree or two off-style.
