English-style Barleywine aged 29 months in Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels
All the way back in July of 2018, we rounded out the week of our first good vibes Beer Festival by brewing a beer with some of the best humans we know. Asleep in the Deep is our second barrel aged collaboration beer we brewed with our friends from Magnanimous Brewing in Tampa, FL. Inspired by our shared love for dark, rich English-style Barleywines, we brewed our first ever double mash Barleywine & laid it down to sleep in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels for 29 months. No adjuncts, no nonsense. Asleep in the Deep is an homage to a time-honored classic that you're sure to enjoy as much as we do.

Though filling to mahogany black, the pouring ribbon is clear brown. Head is thin of khaki fuzz.
A nose of rich caramel nearing Riesen with perhaps a hint of toffee is met by formidable woody whiskey tannin.
Taste adds spiced date nearing anise as decadent vanillin chars are contrasted by peppery, refreshing sassafras. Someone said Waffle Crisp, I love that, and all of a sudden experience it slightly, perhaps parallel to some maple bruleed oats, but get more dark chewy chocolate as I dig in.
The medium body is both crisp yet almost full, not too viscous, and remarkably drinkable.

Its 7-1-22 and this beer is just now being added by me. A year and half old beer and I can't believe nobody on BA has rated it.
This is my first time having it and I recall when it first came out there were a few isolated reports of potentially infection vibes. I know locally voodoo trade groups all got super weary of it and it has become pretty disregarded.
L - pour is not overly impressive. Dark heavy mahogany. Extremely extremely viscous and sugary looking. Corn syrup like lacing. Head is a little bubbly and less frothy for me to rste the look impressive by my expectations.
S - is all maple all day. It actually reminds me of heart & soul with heavy vibes of caramel. Lots and lots of oak and ethanol. It smells a TON like elijah craig barrel proof to me. That is super HOT and super OAKY.
T - absolutely no trace of anything off/infection. Very, very, very sweet. Almost white sugar tasting at first. Classic English barleywine flavors of toasted/candied sugar and molasses. I'm getting sweet marchino cherry and a BCBS remiscent dark fruit quality. Definitely hot.
F - very highly carbonated. Washes down with an evaporative alcohol heat leaving your mouth momentarily dry. Lingering oilyness persists long after the sip is gone. Very nice mouthfeel experience.
O - a really nice barleywine. I would put it both similiar to and on part with mother of all storms. Given the much more available of MOAS though its hard to justify trading for one of these at its one off premium. I will have zero problem discussing this as a plus in future trades but can't see myself actively trying to acquire another of. Not that I wouldn't enjoy again but not worth the price of admission I feel voodoo traders would want for it.
I apologize to anyone reading this who heard me babble too much trade talk. A lot of my beer experience and review is based on value. I've had some top 250 beers that I've rated a bit low just because they're so over hyped. And I have a lot of everyday beers I nudge my rating a little bit high just because they're such a great value and easy acquisition. So a lot of my review (aka rambling notes) are just me remarking on whether I was overall happy with or unhappy with my acquisition.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
