wow... a vanilla stout on cask.. kudos to mr mccord for this.
eyes...
dark and lonely... black with ruby highlights and one finger of sizzling head (that retains). The lacing is great and clingy, I let it sit for at least 10 minutes and the head retained. a good looking stout.
nose....
HUGE vanilla nose, starbucks roast expresso with huge vanilla component, bitter chocolate and bitter vanilla. wow, this is spot on, not sure how the brewer got the vanilla in there but damn is it prevalent. later on in the glass it still smellsthe same but stronger. toffee, coffee, bitter burnt coffee and vanilla. GREAT smell.
taste etc...
the mouthfeel is too thin for a stout, although it is liquid velvet sipping... the taste is a great blend of chocolate, vanilla and bitter chocolate/coffee. you can roll this beer in your mouth, although it is thin it has layers of flavor, rolling it in the mouth reveals deep burnt tones (but not very burnt) and tons of depth. The vanilla is immediate but gives way to chocolate and roasted coffee... and a nice bitterness on the edge regions of the tongue. the bitterness lingers in the finish.
verdict?
damn tasty.. and DAMN drinkable.. I had this after I had a milk stout they had on tap... yes, a milk stout on tap! the vanilla stout was a surprise from a place that has just impressed the crap out of me lately. it is basically based on thier oatmel stout but damn this was a near 5 in the smell dept... if you are in the area... go get it !
