Pours almost pitch black with a thin head that becomes a lasting thin cover. Some trailing lace temporarily sticks to the glass.
The smell is of roasted dark malt, chocolate and bittersweet coffee.
I would like to say that the taste matches the smell. And it does, to a degree. But, the alcohol comes through a bit too much, masking some of the flavors. Also, the flavors grow milder as the drink progresses. A watery thinness, some astringency (acidity?), and a dose of carbonation leaves it without the creaminess/coating that the style usually has. It's drinkable, but not as much as others I've had of this style.
