Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a cola brown color with a one finger head of just off-white foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is lighter overall with it consisting mostly of a lightly toasted and roasted malt smell with some caramel sweetness and a bit of coffee. Along with these are some super light hop smells of citrus and pine.
Taste – The taste begins with a sweeter caramel and roasted malt flavor with a lighter chocolate flavor. Upfront there is a slight citrus hop flavor, but this is quite light. As the taste moves on, the taste takes on a bit more hop with the sweet remaining quite strong. The newly arrived hop is a mix of citrus and pine with it getting moderately strong, but rather light for what is classified as a black IPA. In the end, a bit more sweet chocolate some smoke comes to the tongue leaving a lighter hopped (for an IPA) and somewhat sweeter roasted flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is on the higher side. For the lighter hopped and the sweeter chocolate and caramel flavors a bit more body may have been nicer, bolstering both of them. But with that said, being a 5.5 % abv brew the thinner body/higher carbonation were somewhat appropriate for the more session style.
Overall – An alright brew, but a little light on the hops and a little too heavy on the sweet for a black IPA in my opinion.

Had this on tap at the brewery the day after it was released. What an amazing black IPA. They dry hopped it to let the malt shine through. Really impressive!
A- pours very dark and with a 1 finger head. Looks tasty!
S- smells fresh and crisp. Malty and clean. A little bit of smoke and bread!
T- the malt is so great and bright. Conflicting flavors that blend wonderfully for a finish of smoke and hop.
M- one of the best mouth feels ever. Creamy and fresh. Coats the tongue without wrecking the palate!
O- truly a great beer. The owner says it will only be available on tap. So many great flavors and clean tasting. So many black IPAs are too complicated. This one is simple and clean without sacrificing flavor. Wow!
