Look: Poured black with a 1” head that dissipated pretty quickly, leaving a foam ring and plenty of finely bubbled lacing.
Nose: Bourbon and chocolate.
Attack: Follows the nose closely, maybe a bit intensely of the bourbon — it would be nice to have the dark roast come through a little more fully.
Finish: The bourbon continues; eventually bitterness from the dark roast comes through.
Mouthfeel: Medium, smooth, sufficient carbonation.
Overall: This is a decent barrel-aged offering from a relatively small brewery. The brewery calls it a Belgian Style Stout, for which we have no category yet on BA. My take is that it’s probably closest in our available taxonomy to an American Stout. We’re glad we bought this bottle and are enjoying it — it’s actually pairing quite well tonight with Mrs. mpruden’s meatballs with sweet-and-sour sauce.
