Clear darkish amber brew with plenty of foam in the big Duvel tulip. It's quite aromatic, even a little perfumey. Makes me think that a Kölsch with some rye malt would be an interesting brew. Crisp but not overly dry, there's a good balance, and the nose of roasted malt and buckwheat is very inviting.

Quite malty and even on the rich side. Roast malt and some caramel, it makes me think of an Oktoberfest with a spicier flavor. Thee is some of the rye grainy taste but less of the bitterness. The aftertaste, however, is bitter enough. This is really a decent rye brew. From the mixed 12-pack of 12 oz bottles purchased at Haggen Market.

Big over carbonated head on this, excellent retention, almost too much. Otherwise, yellow color, opaque. Mild lemon and wheat seemingly more than rye noticeable.

I don't know what they were going for on this one. I was like a hefe made with rye? So much lemon, some banana, is that the yeast? Bitter for sure, but no hop flavor. Kind of a mess.

Wow, talk about carbonation, head, and retention. I was full on waiting 5 minutes for this thing to die down, I was seriously wondering if it was infected. Yellow appearance, huge 3" frothy head out of this one. Aroma was lemony, which would become a theme for the beer.

Taste was thin bodied, highly carbonated, lemony sour, bitter but lacking a hop character. Lots of flavor packed in here via the yeast flavor I'm guessing. A unique beer, couldn't come up with anything to compare it to. Couldn't say whether it was the rye or yeast strain causing the confluence of bittering flavor. A little acidic.

Decent, glad I tried it, a good summer beer.

Started off an evening at Brouwers with this brew. Always a fan of rye beers, this is the on Washington beer that leapt off the menu at me. Done!

Pale as a Minnesotan in February, or as golden as John Boehner, depending on how you look at it. Smell was fairly tame, tossing off hops & rye & attendant spiciness.

Dick's Rye Ale didn't disappoint my thirst for rye. The trademark spiciness came through fast & hard, very good rye spike in it, promising & delivering a melange of spicy happiness. Bit of a hop bite, slice of orange behind, but the rye carried this show. Immensely drinkable, the kind of beer where I looked at my pint glass, realized it was 2/3 gone, & wondered precisely where it had gone to. I could have stuck with this one for the night.

Very good beer. My first exposure to Dick's brews, & I wasn't disappointed. I'll try more.

Purchased 11-'09. Consumed 02-'10 in a pint glass.

A - Pours low white head. It has a clear rusty straw color. Almost no continued carbonation. I wish there was a bit mroe froth to this beer.

S - Strong hay smells. Starchy with some pilz-like hops. It has a biting smell, more than you'd expect from 4.5ABV. Only the most faint of pale malt smells.

T - Hoppy bite that snaps like a baby 'gator. Some tangerine peel tastes. Hints of butterscotch with little peeps of cane sugar. Not much yeast flavor despite the sediment in the bottle. I wonder if soem of the spiciness of this beer came from a little bit of dead yeast. The aftertaste is hoppy and a bit acidic.

M - Hard almost crystalline texture. Medium light body though.

D - This is rye beer number 2 for me. Not really that outstanding. Like a lot of IPAs I've had. The rye seems to grant a rough starchy edge to the beer. I was to experiment in my own batch some day.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: golden straw color, slightly opaque, with a thin head.

Smell: very mild malt and citrus hops aroma.

Taste: ever so slightly sweet, with those nice citrus hops again. This one seems a little bit buttery. Nothing offensive, but just not really exciting.

Mouthfeel: nice medium body with good carbonation. Nothing to complain about here.

Drinkability: not bad but it doesn't leave me wanting more.

Aroma: a sour somewhat grainy aroma is dominant, sour smell is similar to a very faint brettanomyces character, very low hop aroma, no noticeable esters
6/12

Appearance: pale gold color, clear, very thin head that dissipated quickly, after swirling the beer a very thin head persisted for a couple of minutes
2/3

Flavor: no noticeable hop flavor, flavor is dominated by bitterness which is moderately high, very little malt character is coming through, diacetyl very noticeable in the finish
10/20

Mouthfeel: medium body, highly carbonated, has a very dry finish
5/5

Overall impression: seems to be lacking in the spicy rye character found in many rye beers, the sourness may be coming from the rye but seems somewhat out of place, diacetyl is out of place, more rye should have been used to bring more of a rye character to the beer, some aroma hops and grain sweetness would have helped balance the bitterness

Poured from a standard 12oz brown bottle into a pilz glass. The poured poured flat with almost no head. The appearance is straw yellow with a pale haze left from some suspended particles. Taste is ok. It is slightly malty with a hard to describe sweetness coming through and minimal hop flavors. Mouthfeel falls apart. Maybe its just this bottle, but it comes across watery, thin and rather flat with no supporting carbonation. Overall this beer could use a bit more character and some additional priming.

Prost!

The Rye Ale pours a light golden color with a 2 finger foam head and some pretty sudsy lacing.

The aroma doesn't come through too much. What I get is soft grain and lemon smell. Also pancakes.

The taste is grain malt with a slight tartness on the finish. This is a crisp and clean brew. It is thin in the mouth and leaves some bitterness on the tongue as it leaves and tickles the throat. Overall a middle of the road ale whose characteristics didn't really make themselves apparent.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a standard ale glass.
A - An apricot shad of golden w/ translucent haze. Particles are seen floating under a 2 finger soapy white head. Visual streams of carbonation rise to the top, but very little lace is deposited.

S - A gentle grain aroma that has a noticeable rye note. Light fruit and a dash of spice are nestled in the nose.

T & M - Highly effervescent as noted before in the appearance category. A dry flavor is felt overall, not much in the way of sweetness. A subtle full body very light on the tongue, very crisp and refreshing. An herbal note appears as it warms. Taste of rye and light malts - the rye flavors appear in a muted way.

D - A palate cleanser for sure, not high in flavor or aroma, but pleasant w/ what it does have to offer. A clean, lighter than full bodied ale and a tasty beer. A touch of rye malt is there in the taste, but not recommended if you don't like fizziness. I would pair this with fried foods like chicken or veal parm.

Exceptionally light in appearance, like an American lager – bright and brassy with a soft white head held aloft by well-sustained carbonation. The aroma is distant but dry, the lace is widespread though thin.

Dick’s Rye has a relaxed malty flavor with nothing leaning too far in any one direction. This makes it companionable with an easiness of drinkability that should lend it broad appeal. A fine thirst quencher or lunch-hour beer. I enjoyed the heck out of it.

A hazy brass-gold with smallish head and good, clinging lace. Bubbles stream upward through the pint glass as if this were soda. Aroma of grass, hay, and grain. The flavor contains a healthy but soft malt flavor, like many golden ales, alongside a decent hop flavor, and a twinge of crisp mintiness from the rye. There's some dead-tasting, sickly-fruit yeast but that can be kept to a minimum with a gentle pour. Mouthfeel is a bit sharp and beady, but refreshing. Quite a good beer from Dick's, although it's kind of a wimpy style.

This beer looks like it might be reasonably decent but appearances can be decieving. Pours a pale color with a thick white head. Smell is sulfury with a hint of rye but mostly sulfur. Tastes sour with metallic hints finishing with rye. Dick, did you bottle the beast and try and pass it off as a microbrew? Poor drinkablitity, I don't think I be drinking this beer again. I'm serious, this beer can be mistaken for milwaukee's beast.
