22oz bottle poured into a Russian River tulip

P- amber w/ a red hue; nice color; 1f white head
n- bold; raspberry; underlaying spice; biscuity malt
t- a tasty blend of sweet/tart raspberry, sweet malt, and med-bold alcohol warmth (in the finish/aftertaste); alcohol gets more intense (and borderline overbearing) as it warms, though
mf- med-bodied w/ med-high carb; a touch syrupy in the aftertaste
o- pretty solid imo, even despite the booziness; exceeded expectations; would have again

Poured from 22oz bomber into a tulip. This year, 2013, the ABV is 8.0%.

Appearance: brassy hue with a very light effervescence and no haze whatsoever. Head poured a finger of frothy white foam which dissipated pretty quickly, but leaves a good lace on the glass. Not very tripel-looking, but I must say the color and clarity are quite compelling.

Smell: quite mild with a light sweetness and a tinge of natural raspberry. Some fruit beers have a real Jolly Rancher type candy quality; this is much more subdued and genuine-smelling. It is, however, a bit light for my taste -- turn up the volume, please!

Taste: quite sweet with a fair bit of alcohol heat and over-done sweetness. Raspberry is quite nice, though, with a tart, restrained flavor up front developing into a more candylike flavor at the end as the tripel sweetness comes through. I am of two minds about this beer: not the best tripel around, but a compelling raspberry ale. I think this beer could use a lot more refinement, though.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation, surprising considering the lack of apparent effervescence. Creaminess is pretty decent, although I admit I do ask a lot of a tripel.

Overall: I won't be going after this beer again, although maybe if they're still releasing it in a few years I may give it a shot. I really enjoy tripels as a rule, and often enjoy fruit beers -- but in this particular brew the cross doesn't really work. Not a horrible beer, but probably not worth your time and money.

I've had this fruited tripel on numerous occasions over the years and have known different vintages to exhibit different character. In years past the raspberry flavor was inescapable and gave the otherwise golden ale a notable pink blush. By comparison, the '09 model seems a bit shy on the berries. Its Belgian ale qualities are piquant and retain a sharp edge perhaps from use of candi sugar. There's also a spiced grain quality and some alcoholic warmth.

Ultimately this ale is very workable as a tripel but doesn't go far as a fruit beer. When the fruit in Dick's Raspberry Tripel is given its due, bartenders in Olympia will pour a 50/50 blend of it with an imperial stout such as The Abyss to create a rich and memorable dessert beer.
