Served on-draught into a .3L lager glass at Greifenklau in Bamberg, Franconia, Germany in June 2011. 4.9% according to the menu, which calls this simple "Greifenklaubier". Cost was 1.70 euro. Reviewed from notes.
A: Pours a 1.5 finger head of no cream, fair thickness, and average retention. Colour is a clear lager gold. Predictable, but vibrant. Transparent.
Sm: Caramel, slight amber hops, and pleasant full barley.
T: Caramel and amber hops over top a plain but full barley foundation. Slight cream on the finish. The full barley platform accentuates the hops their refreshing character. Complex for a lager and very balanced. I wouldn't call it complex, but for the style it has a pleasant simplicity that suits its aims.
Mf: Smooth and wet, but restrained enough to let the flavours florish. Complements the body.
Dr: Very affordable and incredibly full-bodied for a lager. Not the macro thin barley shite I've come to expect after drinking American lagers. A refreshing summer beer. Well priced methnks.
A poor candidate for aging.
Would pair well with food.
