Drunk at the source in September 2023.

L: Golden yellow, bright white head, lots of large bubbles.

S: Sweet bread, yeast and the smell of the cigarette the thoughtless bloke beside me is puffing on (bloody Europeans!).

T: Sweet bread, earthy hops, and a slight touch of cola.

M: Mild, moderately carbonated and easy to drink.

O: A refreshing, tasty lager in the best German tradition.

Cheers!

From draft at maybe the best bar in Amsterdam, Proeflokaal 't Kelkje. Went here two days in a row. He emphasizes German lagers and makes his own spirits. Also has lots of special German bottles, with the full range of Schlenkerla. Anyway, this is a tasty Helles. Pretty standard, drinks clean, grainy, crisp, tasty.

Purchased in Bamberg. Pours slightly hazy, dark gold in color with one inch head. Taste is French bread, wheat, and white sugar. Light bodied, medium low carbonation and sweet. Delicious lager. One of the better lagers this trip. Could session.

On-draft at Brauerei Greifenklau on 4/8/2013. Pours a translucent honey-colored hue with a loose, half-inch, cream-colored head that settles into a consistent 1/8th inch cap. Textured bands of lacing coat the walls of the glass. Nose is very subdued - light malts and some light, fruity esters which open up as the beer warms. Taste is light in body with a trace of sour mash, as well as a grassy/fresh hay character, followed by earthy, noble hops at the finish. Mouthfeel is quite enjoyable - clean with an easy/even carbonation that pleasantly cleanses the palate. Overall, a solid, quaffable session lager. Nuances are there, but easily missed if the time is not spent to tease them out.

Wow! Great beer in a great restaurant. Stayed in the nearby Hotel Altenburgblick which is owned by family members. Great breakfast provided. Popped up the steep hill to visit the brewpub and was satisfied with the result. Good beer on tap, good food and great service. Decent beer and good food. What else would you want?

.5L served in beer mug on tap at Brewery taproom.

A- Clear, Deep Gold, one finger head with mild retention, little lacing.

S- Toasted malts, relativelty neutral, slight hints of hops and citrus.

T- Toated malts, citrus and distinctive bitter hops at the end. Leaves a little aftertaste in the mouth.

M- Medium bodied, mild carbonation, relatively crisp.

D- Not a bad beer, but doesn't stand out significantly in Germany's brewing heartland.

On tap at the brewery...

A-Copper-gold in color with a hint of green-grain. Foamy head that left a strong lace. No apparent sediment, but the beer seemed a little cloudy, not typical for the style.

S-Bready aroma with hints of earthy hops. Smells green, like under-ripe/undercooked barley.

T-Malty taste hits first, but it's very quickly followed up by bitterness from some earthy hops. The hops add only bitterness, and not much flavor.

M-Medium bodied with a decent chewiness.

D-Not an overly pleasant beer. Seems a little off for the style.

Overall, I will not drink this again. It was quite a walk to get here from the other breweries in town, and I did not feel rewarded for my effort.

This beer is a good example of the lagers found in and around Bamberg. The beer is served at about 8 degrees Celsius and in a nice stein krug. Because of the stein the color is difficult to see, but appears to be golden. This a beer that refreshes and can be enjoyed all evening long. I think this is a classic.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub in Bamberg, Nov. 2004.

This lagerbier (helles?) poured a clear, light amber color with creamy, off-white foam that settled. The smell was very lightly malty. The taste was lightly malty with modest hoppiness. There was no hint of smoke. Overall the flavor was somewhat thin. The mouthfeel was smooth with medium-light body and moderate carbonation. This was an OK lager, though a bit thin on flavor. This is their year-round beer, and perhaps their regulars like it this way.
