Black as coal, liquefied. Effervescent, too -- a full three fingers of foam spring from the dark depths, capping the brew with a top the color and consistency of boiling sugar. The bubbles fizzle away fairly quickly, leaving behind thin streaks of soapy lacing.
Pecans are big in the aroma, sweet and nutty. Toasted oats, light roast coffee, milk chocolate. Toast, a hint of smoke, maybe from the Scotch. Smooth, roasty, savory.
The apricots the heard about on the label appear in the flavor in a big way -- Long Strange Trip is very close to being a sour stout. Tangy fruit washes over all parts of the tongue and grips it with puckered fingers between sips. The roast here is just a touch on the burnt side -- a little overly roasty and acrid. Earthy bitterness and alcohol. You do get some nice dark chocolate notes and a bit of toasted pecans.
Medium-light body, lush on the tongue. Bubbles massage the tongue gently. Alcohol is fairly noticeable, comes through the nose.
Decent. Could use more sweetness and less bitter roast in the flavor.

Miscounted the beers I drank so we actually have two to go. Number 8 from Phelps, bomber into Westy chalices.
A-Pours a rich dark brown with a huge, foamy mocha head that has huge lacing and retention. Pretty to look at.
S-Roasty, underlying slight hint of sweetness. Roast seems to come from malt rather than coffee or nibs I think but we'll see. Appealing in any case. Baltic porter perhaps?
T-Seems like a robust or Baltic porter to me. Nice roastiness, higher on the bitter end. Hops are moderately light. I guess this could be a bigger black IPA, though I don't like that style with that much roast. Nice flavor.
M-Medium bodied, not overly dry.
O-Another fine beer. Good flavors, easy to drink.

Had this beer on a lazy summer Arizona evening about a month ago and was surprised I didn't see it here. I'm going from memory here so bear with me.
Poured pitch black into a regular pint glass, with maybe a finger or two of head... Can't remember that exactly, but it was nothing too memorable.
Smell was not memorable enough to really state my opinion, but I vaguely remember thinking it smelled like a run-of-the-mill stout, with a little smoke mixed in. The taste was really where it was at.
On tasting, the smoke came back a little, but was blown away by a excellent toasty flavor. That made this oatmeal stout stick out from others I've had. The beer was brewed with toasted pecans, dates, and apricots. The nuts initialized, while the dates added to the toasty-ness, and while I don't like dates, really, the apricots balanced them (and the toast) out really well. I was impressed.
Mouthfeel: If I'm remembering correctly, this beer had a little more carbonation than I was expecting. Though I enjoy my really thick, oily stouts, this was a nice departure from that.
Overall, this was enjoyed with as much enthusiasm as the Stone Espresso Imperial Russian Stout we also cracked that night. Not sure if they're still brewing it, or if you can find it, so overall it gets that final bump-up to 4.5
