I know this beer is a few years old, back in the heyday of me collecting and not drinking what I collected. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at 50 degrees. The pour created a frothy, airy, light tan one-fingered head with abysmal retention. The fast dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The color is dark brown, with dark reddish hues, charting at SRM 28 and semi-opaque. I was hoping for some head retention, but I think the high ABV plays a role in this.
Nosing the beer, I detect notes of rum, chocolate, medium roasted coffee, char, oak, Maillard, vanilla, caramel, raisins, and toasted dark bread. After smelling the beer a few times, I noticed a light floral, creaminess, phenols, toffee, leather, and a light smoky note.
Sipping the beer, earthy, vanilla, Maillard, char, light floral notes, molasses, and rum. A few more swallows, I notice caramel, medium roasted coffee, chocolate, alcohol, leather, phenols, raisins, toffee, and a hint of burnt grains.
The mouthfeel is chewy, finishing hot. The body is heavy with low carbonation.
Final Thought: Considering that this beer was cellared to mellow out the high ABV, yet the cellaring did not have a significant effect on the alcohol warming. The alcohol heat in this beer is making it more challenging to drink. As the beer warms up, the Maillard and heavy use of malts come out more. I wanted to enjoy this beer, alas, I did not.
