Purchased and sampled in northern Kazakhstan, this brown 1/2 liter bottle features a red, white and gold label with an eagle soaring above the name and in front of a mountain range (the Tian-Shan mountains tower over Almaty like the Rockies do over Denver). Sugar is an ingredient. Best before 9/14/06, I opened it on 4/7/06.
Pours a clear slightly reddish gold under a one finger white head that fades quickly to thick film, then lingers, leaving a few lace strings. The nose features mild malt and a hint of grape. The mouth is light and fairly prickly. There is a good grain opening, bready and unsweet. The hops are there, too, subdued, floral and not metallic. There is very little aftertaste - just a dry tickle in the back of the throat. Overall, quite drinkable.
