Reviewed from notes taken in Summer 2015. Served on-draught at a bar in Helsinki.
APPEARANCE: ~2.5cm in height. Off-white head colour. Head has nice creaminess and thickness. Head retention is nice - ~6 minutes.
Body is a murky dull copper colour. I see no yeast/lees within.
A decent looking brew, but it lacks any unique or special attributes.
AROMA: Floral hops, cotton candy, pale malts, cream, candied fruit.
Aromatic intensity is average. Alcohol seems well hidden.
TASTE: A middling balance of generic floral hop flavour, cotton candy, and pale malts. The yeast profile is clean. Alcohol is noticeable.
Simple and somewhat shallow, but still enjoyable. Average duration and intensity of flavour. Imbalanced; it's too bitter.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, overcarbonated, unrefreshing, medium-bodied. This texture is a decent companion to the taste, but it fails to accentuate specific notes or to elevate the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: Drinkable but unremarkable. Though it's from one of my favourite Finnish breweries, Proto 8 is ultimately decent at best.
