look: 3.75 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 4.25
Appearance: Virtually pitch black. Pours a one finger head with moderately sized bubbles and a brown tint. Head recedes at a moderate pace.
Aroma: Whisky, vanilla, oak, roasted malt. You can tell that it's oak aged!
Taste: The whisky/oak flavour is evident right away, but quite mild at first. It's only in the aftertaste where the sweet bourbon-like flavour really gets its way. At first you get mostly malt, perhaps with a hint of licorice -- like a fairly heavy and strong porter. Leaves a nice warming feeling.
Mouthfeel: The porter lingers in the mouth, although it's fairly uninteresting at first. Rather heavy body.
Overall: this tuned version of Malmgård's X-Porter has been matured with oak flakes from bourbon casks and the result is good. It's not the most intensely whisky or oak flavoured beer I've ever had, but sometimes those go over the board anyway. This one has a nice balance and is quite drinkable.
