Positive surprise. Nice combo of color (deep copper) and smooth, silky, about one inch head that lasts quite long, few minutes at least (the appearance actually reminds me a lot of their CCCCC IPA - and thus a bit deeper than "ordinary" APA). Mild carbonation. Hop profile is sophisticated and distinguishable. Taste has notes reminding the taste of fresh pine forest and elderflower. Malts are somewhat lacking, and the structure in this sense is not unforgettable in any way. Still, way more than decent APA. Beer hunter's continue to impress as one od the best craft breweries in Finland.

BOTTLE: Purchased at an Alko in Kuopio, Finland. Brown glass. Classy understated red & blue label design. Unbranded pry-off crown cap. Best before: 09/15. 33cl.

Reviewed live as an American pale ale per the label and name. Served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude (in Kuopio). Expectations are above average given this brewery's reputation, though their CCCCC IPA failed to impress.

6% ABV. Brewed with: Nugget, Chinook, and Columbus.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: None really forms, but there is an off-white floater ring that stikcs around for maybe 40 seconds. It's not real thick or creamy, nor is its consistency impressive. Leaves no lacing on the sides of the glass.

BODY: Translucent honey-copper with faint amber hues. Below average vibrance. Nontransparent. Appears filtered; I see no yeast or hop sediment.

Seems undercarbonated. This is a pretty mediocre appearance for an American pale ale, but I'm optimistic. There are no egregious flaws.

AROMA: Has a pleasant hop profile comprised of sticky pine and concomitant resins. A bit floral, a bit herbal, but never too twiggy or junipery like many ostensibly hoppy Finnish beers. The hops are well tamed by the sweet malt backbone, which is comprised of pale and amber malts. Even-keeled, with a seemingly good balance.

No yeast character, off-notes, or booze is detectable.

Aromatic intensity is average.

Suggests an enjoyable pale ale with good balance. Could this be the first hoppy Finnish beer I've tried that actually commits to its hops?

TASTE & TEXTURE: ...Not quite, but it's better than most. Hints of pine, evergreen, and spruce round out the tree-like hop profile - which isn't as sticky as you might expect. There's a bit of herbal character and some pleasant resins. No booze emerges, nor does any off-character. I'm glad this isn't junipery or twig-like like so many Finnish IPAs. Yeast attenuation seems apt. Ale esters lend additional intangible complexity to the already adequate flavour profile.

No, it isn't the intricate subtle taste of some of the best beers in the style - and it's more simple and shallow than many widely available American offerings (including even Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale), but for a Finnish pale ale it's surprisingly sophisticated. Still, it can't compete with world-class offerings by any stretch.

The malt backbone isn't too sweet, bringing notes of amber malts and pale malts to tame the admittedly modest hop bitterness. I find it well-balanced albeit simple (or even plain), and I do like it. But it leaves a lot to be desired.

Mouthfeel-wise, it's aptly medium-bodied with sufficient heft and weight on the palate. Slightly sticky but never syrupy. Smooth and wet, but unrefreshing. I almost find some muted Christmasy spice as it comes to temperature - odd. Slightly overcarbonated.

There's not a perfect harmony of texture and taste, but the stickiness of the mouthfeel does help bring out the subtle pine, and this texture is more than a decent complement to the flavour profile - even if it isn't quite dialed in.

OVERALL: Admittedly better than most Finnish brewed pale ales (and more hop-forward than even most Finnish IPAs), but still severely lacking compared to expressions from international breweries. This is probably currently one of - if not *the* - best pale ales (American style or otherwise) brewed in Finland, but that says more about Finnish pale ales than it does about Mufloni APA. Worth trying if you're craving a hoppy brew in Finland, and certainly drinkable for its 6% ABV, but not a beer that will impress the discerning drinker. Beer enthusiasts are better off reaching for Swedish (or other international) pale ales when in Finland.
