BOTTLE: Purchased at an Alko in Kuopio, Finland. Brown glass. Pry-off crown cap depicting the best before date (06/15). Simple black and white label design.
Expectations are above average given this brewery's reputation. Served chilled into a mason jar and allowed to come to room temperature over the course of consumption. Reviewed live as a doppelbock per Alko's product description.
6.50% ABV. 15.3 plato. 184 EBC. 27 EBU. 60kcal/100ml.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~1 inch wide. Dull khaki colour. Fizzy, with poor (~40 second) retention. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Opaque dark ruby-black. No yeast or sediment can be seen.
Looks decent for a doppelbock. Definitely looks like a filling beer, but the head isn't real impressive. Appears aptly carbonated.
AROMA: Faint suggestions of dark fruit - plum, prune, dates, raisin. Dark malts, of course. Clean ester-free lager yeast guides the beer. Sticky sweet caramelization. Hoisin sauce. Raisinbread, pumpernickel.
There's/there're no hop presence, off-notes, or overt booze.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Has a sticky texture, which complements the dominate notes of wilted dark fruit: plums, prunes, dates, raisin...maybe a dab of grape. The focus isn't on the malts, oddly, which isn't right for this style. The malts are downplayed in presence and generic in character - they're just flat dark malts. Clean ester-free lager yeast lends the beer a neutrality and a cohesion, but I'm left with the impression that this doppelbock offers no real subtlety or nuance.
While the carbonation is perfect and the smoothness and wetness help it be more refreshing, this isn't a style that is meant to refresh. More of a robust heavy filling presence is needed; we're talking about doppelbock - the style that satiated many a German monk for the entire duration of lent. This isn't a bready meal in a glass (even if it does suggest vague hints of pumpernickel).
The flat neutral presentation of flavour lent by the mouthfeel leaves the beer feeling plain, simple, and shallow. While it's well balanced if a bit sweet, there's just nothing exciting about the build - cohesive though it may be. Flavour duration and intensity are average.
Lacks a harmony of texture to taste. This mouthfeel does not elevate the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: Definitely drinkable - but then its above average drinkability runs against the style. I do like it, and its hides its modest ABV well, but I don't know that it's even the best doppelbock in Finland - let alone one of the best in Europe or the world. This is largely forgettable, and would be written off if not for the fact that it's brewed in a country aching for any domestic expression of uncommon German styles. This is no testament to Beer Hunter's' reputation as one of (if not the) best brewery(ies) in Finland, and I wouldn't bother buying it again at this price point - though it's definitely above average.
